Don Quixote is sure because he's read so in books about chivalry. But aged Quixote is not merely content to read. So he adorns himself in armor, takes up a makeshift lance and rides off to set the world right. Peter Yates directs from a script by John Mortimer and serves up a dreamy array of special effects both subtly and grandly scaled. Why would Quixote engage windmills in battle? Better yet, why not? To see the world through his eyes is to embrace life as the fullest adventure...

John Lithgow and the sadly departed Bob Hoskins are utterly convincing as the main characters.
A Spaniard whose interest is knights and chivalry changes his name and appoints his neighbour as his squire. Setting off to seek adventure he employs a washerwoman as his lady.
WHAT CAN I SAY?
One of the best movies that really stick to the book with John Lithgow's brilliant performance as Don Quixote he is so real and filled with emotion, humour, and wisdom. with Bob Hoskins as his sidekick Sancho Panza he is perfect and so hilarious.
it is really lovely to See these two great talents working together it make
Don Quixote a cherished experience, and one not to be missed ..
Add to that we have the beautiful Vanessa Williams to perk things up every now and then as Quixote's fantasy lady
and we have the brilliant and charming Isabella Rossellini as The Duchess
on top of all that we have the lovely Amelia Warner as Don Quixote's niece .her beauty and heartfelt acting really made a spark to her character...
whan you ad all that mix of talents we have magic all around us in this Endearing. Enchanting. Touching classic tale of a man's dream, his epic journey, and his one true love.
The original book is so full of wonderful puns and perhaps the puns should have materialized into visual ones for the film to succeed. In my opinion we get a clue about what the film might have been when windmills become filmic monsters and the whole thing becomes lots of fun. These kinds of scenes are the most entertaining in the film.
To its credit, this adaptation sticks worthily to the original story but a film is not a book and needs an altogether different approach if it is to establish itself as an entertainment, separate from a book. Worth seeing once, I think.
The Boulevard DVD is a very nice looking full frame (1.33) transfer.
I stopped when I saw John Lithgow and Bob Hoskins gracing the cover of this tape, and had to have it when I saw that the screenplay was written by John Mortimer (author of the Rumpole of the Bailey stories). The movie is visually stunning, with Quixote's hallucinations leaping off the screen in vibrant colors. Also, though the tape is marked as "not rated," it contains very little violence, and nothing else that would make it unsuitable for younger viewers.
Now for the bad news: the story is somewhat choppy, and, worse, seems to drag on with no real point. Though my children (7 and 10) liked the scenes with the giants, they became quite bored later and simply wandered away. That said, I did enjoy this movie, and am glad that I watched it, though I may never bother to watch it again. Therefore, let me give this movie a very qualified recommendation.
