As a student in London some years ago, I visited what I suspect was Don McCullin's first exhibition. He was only a few years older than me at the time and, I believe, he had become a photographer with little, if any, training. The exhibition covered life in the less romantic parts of London and made a great impact on both myself, and other visitors to the exhibition. Somehow, he managed to get across the feeling of desperation of a community in black and white photographs.
This book is a collection of photographs that cover more serious events that he has photographed, around the world, during the intervening years. Taken individually, they are interesting photographs of events of which we are well aware but, as a collection, they create serious emotions that make us think more seriously.
I have just finished the 64 photographs, and I am going have a glass of wine. It is a book well worth viewing.

These are a very simple series for anyone wanting a quick flavour of a photographer's work and in this they succeed very well. The page size is pocketable and is JUST big enough to do justice to images which obviously ought to be larger for impact. Glued spine paperback, durable enough for purpose. Cannot fault the quality of paper used or the actual printing of the photographs though, photos on right hand side, captions only on left hand page, very clean. Highly recommended.

Bought a selection of Donald McCullin's books after watching a documentary about him a few weeks back. His work is excellent and I haven't been disappointed in any of them. To see an exhibition of his could only top viewing the books.
