Anyone who enjoys the novels of Fanny Burney or Samuel Richardson is missing out if they do not consider the ideas in this book. More than that, to understand the way we live now, it is essential to appreciate the changing notion of privacy, and its consequences.

The idea of spaces that are male or female opens up a new perspective on the novels in question, whose authors delineated the roles of the sexes with great subtlety. They expected their readers to pick up the smallest hints given by the settings for their plots, but we surely miss many of the unspoken signs. It's funny that we are happy to consider the "gendered" space in a Mongolian yurt, but overlook the iron conventions on our doorstep. Think how embarrassed we are to use lavatories for the opposite sex in public places, but are quite untroubled by using the same room in private houses.

This is an academic book, not an amateur ramble, and it arms the reader with the knowledge to return to many a novel of the 18th century with increased enjoyment. The birth scene in Tristram Shandy is just one example that benefits. We who read for pleasure owe Dr Lipsedge our thanks.
