Review

"This is a delightful chronicle about a young ocean lover's journey to turn her passion into a career in science, and that scientist's coming-of-age as she observes an ocean changing around her and the creatures she has come to love and defend. I found it both relaxing and energizing, all at the same time."--Carl Safina, author of "Song for the Blue Ocean "

I found it both relaxing and energizing, all at the same time."--Carl Safina, author of "Song for the Blue Ocean "

"I simply love this book. In "Dolphin Confidential", renowned scientist Maddalena Bearzi tells us what it is like to be a field researcher and what it is like to be a dolphin, the ups and downs of daily life, and her excitement about learning just who these fascinating animals are. Bearzi's science is impeccable, and her book is an easy read for those who want to share her and the dolphin's lives."--Marc Bekoff, author of Wild Justice

"Maddalena Bearzi impresses me with her capabilities and passion as a marine mammal scientist and her clear and erudite manner of expressing the interface between science and an emotional sense of the animals she studies. I recommend this beautifully illustrated book to the starry-eyed juvenile would-be marine biologist, to those of us beginning our twilight years who may need a reminder of how we started and what this should mean in a larger sense of helping fragile Earth, and to all those academically and environmentally minded in between."--Bernd W rsig, Texas A&M University at Galveston

""Dolphin Confidential" takes the reader on the author's memorable journey from a curious nature-lover to a respected, thoughtful scientist and conservation advocate. Full of intriguing observations and exciting field experiences, this book will help people to view the oceans and marine life with respect and joy, and to build the stewardship ethic that is so greatly needed. For people who love and are fascinated by dolphins, this book is a true treasure."--Ellen Prager, author of Sex, Drugs, and Sea Slime: The Ocean's Oddest Creatures

I'm a budding marine mammal biologist so I was overjoyed when this book first came out, and despite not really having the money I bought it anyway.
I've always liked reading autobiographies as they're real stories with real challenges in them. This book presents just that. I couldn't put it down. It filled me with so much hope and re-ignited my passion (not that it was dwindling too much, but times a difficult these days), it really helped me get back on the horse, or boat if you will, as, although the author didn't face the same problems that I have now, there were still problems that had to be overcome and reading about someone who overcame their obstacles has really helped me in my time of doubt.
From a less personal point of view the book is well written and has a fabulous story to follow. The passion and inspiration that you pull from the book are very strong and the experiences well described. I recommend this to anyone who's an environmentalist especially with the ocean in mind.

You just look at the cover and you already feel yourself completely immersed in the book, with fishes and dolphins swimming around you. This is the kind of book that you start and you do not want to stop reading it.
Dolphin Confidential is an easy and passionate book, characterized by an amazing personal, neat and sincere touch. It has the great capability to take you by hand throughout all Maddalena's adventures and shows you the beauty and challenges of being out in the nature and study cetaceans.
But, biologists or not, it doesn't matter; this is a book for everybody... For students who need inspiration for what they are doing, for cetacean experts who want to re-live some memories, for non-biology people who want to know better about dolphin research `stuff', for travellers who want to read about remote places and breath salty waters, for dreamers who just want to take a breath from a busy day.
Do not miss it!

HASH(0x9823e21c) out of 5 stars Inspiring and Captivating 12 Mar. 2012
By Megan Mudron - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Dolphin Confidential was an absolute delight to read. As a young scientist, it was incredibly inspiring to read about the experiences described, and it reaffirmed my dreams to become a marine biologist (which is always important while in the dregs of graduate school!). The detail into which this book delves articulates exactly what I wish to do with my degree in the future, including environmental conservation and education. This wonderful autobiography left a measurable impact on me, as I'm sure it will to everyone else who reads it- whether they are scientists, students, or just love the ocean and all it has to offer.

HASH(0x9810e90c) out of 5 stars Unique look into the world of marine life 21 Oct. 2012
By Matthew A. Bille - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Bearzi's touching memoir of her scientific work is mostly about dolphins, but there's a great deal more here. First is her personal journey. The author doesn't start with a data dump on dolphins: rather, we see through her eyes as she progresses through her degrees and practical work to learn about animals (graduating from lizards up through sea turtles to cetaceans). She cautions about over-humanizing other animals, but admits the temptation is sometimes irresistible. An incident where a group of dolphins stopped feeding and took off at high speed to (apparently) lead researchers to an isolated and drowning human makes her wonder. As her studies and conservation efforts take her from the Mediterranean to the Pacific, we not only learn about creatures and ecosystems but dire environmental threats. Everyone (hopefully) knows we are damaging the marine ecosystem with garbage and pollutants, but Bearzi brings it home in a personal way no reader will forget. If you want detailed breakdowns of species, ranges, etc., there are better books for that, but this author's personal journey into the world of the dolphin is unforgettable.

HASH(0x9823e4f8) out of 5 stars Wonderful 20 April 2012
By Venice Artichoke - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is a wonderfully written autobiography describing a world I knew very little about. Not only did it open my eyes to the life of a marine biologist, it reminded me that every one of us must do whatever we can to protect our environment. Maddalena Bearzi's passion for dolphins and all living things is contagious, and I've found myself talking about her book and her work to anyone who will listen.

HASH(0x9823e738) out of 5 stars Passionate, honest and inspiring 9 May 2013
By Daniela Maldini, PhD - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Maddalena Bearzi wrote the first book in the field of marine mammalogy that truly shows humanity. As a colleague living a parallel life to that of Dr. Bearzi, I can say that Maddalena has risen to the challenge of telling the truth about field work. This book will open the eyes of people who are not privy to the challenges and simple yet complex life story of a field biologist. In an age where documentaries and accounts of field work feed upon the hype of adventure and glamour, this book tells the true, simple, honest and remarkable story of a young woman finding her path through life by passion, perseverance and day-to-day experiences, which often are less glamorous than what most believe is the life of a marine biologist. I would recommend this read to everyone with an interest in dolphins and a marine biology career, especially young women who have so few role-models to look up to. This is a remarkable life story with heart. It is the most candid portrayal of a life I have ever read.
