Product Description

Dogg Food was the first Tha Dogg Pound album released by Death Row. It became an instant classic selling over 3 million copies in its first year. The controversial hit New York, New York summed up all the East-West drama that dominated the hip-hop community in the mid 1990s. With guest appearances from Snoop Doggy Dogg and Tray Dee, Dogg Food is a piece of history that retains all its freshness today. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

first off, this album is NOT produced by dr dre, every track is mixed by dre but is produced by DAT NIGGA DAZ, one of the dogg pound duo alongside excellent lyricist kurupt. kurupt steals the show with his dope rhyming while snoop adds his vocal (and lyrical) talents a few tracks over some of daz's best beats.
death row record fans will now daz produced some of the best tracks of 2pacs "all eyes on me" album, and it must be noted that while those tracks on 2pacs records were tight, here daz lets the beats run for a while after the actual vocal parts of the songs are done. and as this album is 16 tracks (and around 70 mins) long it is the first death row album that i personally find hard listen to all the way till the end. and also the first of their albums that isnt tight as i said the beats are allowed to run. but it aint a bad thing at all, just diff from chronic and doggy style, only the obvious single "lets play house" is short and consise. it is also more hardcore in its rap style then those earlier death row records.
best tracks are new york new york, do what i feel, dogg pound gangstas. new york new york started the east-west feud of the 90s, though more due to the video which featured the dogg pound and snoop as giants looming over ny kicking down their buildings (i think they were shot at in their trailer while shooting a video on location in ny after this vid, and capone n noreaga put out a reply track with mobb deep called "l.a, l.a"). but the track itself is not a direct dis, rather it was a response to biggies claim that west coast rappers are good for gangsta but cant really rhyme... well everyone knows kurupt is a true exception and he proves it on this track amongs others on a great hard rap album.

WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST RAP ALBUMS IN MY COLLECTION. EVERY TRACK IS POPPING WITH STRAIGHT UP G FUNK AND HARD HITTING LYRICS. MIND YOU PRODUCED BY THE DOCTER AND SUGE KNIGHT WHAT ELSE CAN YOU EXPECT? IF YOUR INTO THE OLD STYLE DEATH ROW SOUND THEN THIS IS A MUST, FULL OF RAW GANGSTER ATTITUDE THIS IS DEFINATLEY SOME OF THE FINEST WORK TO COME FROM THE REKNOWNED DEATH ROW STABLE. AS WELL AS THE LYRICAL GENIUS OF DAZ AND KURUPT 'DOGG FOOD' ALSO FEATURES THE THEN EMERGING TALENT OF SNOOP DOGGY DOGG. HIS DISTINCTIVE RAPPING STYLE FEATURES IN VARIOUS TRACKS INCLUDING 'NEW YORK, NEW YORK', WHICH WAS THE FIRST SINGLE TO BE RELEASED FROM THE ALBUM AND IS A SCARCASTIC PORTRAYL OF THE BIG APPLE. THE TRACK IS SET TO A GREAT BACKBEAT WITH LYRICS BY SNOOP DOGG AND KURUPT. THE CHORUS IS EXTREMELY CATCHY, DON'T BE SURPRIZED TO FIND YOURSELF MONOTONOUSLY WHISTLING THE TUNE. IN MY OPINION THE TRACK OF THE ALBUM IS THE AWESOME 'SMOOTH', AGAIN FEATURING SNOOP. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS TUNE FROM THE LYRICS TO THE FUNKY BASELINE, AND EVEN THE CHORUS.
THE ALBUM ALSO CONTAINS A GOOD VARIETY OF TUNES RANGING FROM THE STEREOTYPICAL GANGSTA RAP IN 'DOGG POUNG GANGSTAZ' TO SOME TONED DOWN R&B IN 'LETS PLAY HOUSE' FEATURING DEATH ROWS OWN R&B CROONER NATE DOGG.
THE ALBUM IS SET AT A FURIOUS PACE WITH SHARP LYRICS AND BOUNCY BEATS, JUST WHAT YOU HAVE COME TO EXPECT FROM DEATH ROW. IT TYPIFIES WEST COAST RAP WITH BOTH ITS CONTENT AND ITS CONSTANT " DISSING" OF THE EAST SIDE.
AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED 'DOGG FOOD' COMPETES WITH THE BEST OF THEM AND IS A NECCESSITY TO ANYONE WHO APPRETIATES THE EARLY DEATH ROW RELEASES. IT IS DR DRE AT HIS FINEST AND A FANTASTIC ADVERTISEMENT FOR WEST COAST RAP. IF YOU HAVENT HERD YET IT WHATS UP WITH YOU!!!

From the opening salvo of Dogg Pound Gangstaz this LP showcases superb Daz production and Kurupt rhyming at his young, hungry best with Daz's rhymes on point too.Cameo's from snoop and Nate are sparse but cool and the r+b-ish efforts fit in well with the smooth overall feel. Often neglected, this album is up there with The Chronic and Doggystyle as Death Row classics. Check out their new album as DPG and their solo albums but always come back to this, a G-Funk classic.

I purchased this CD many years ago, when it was first released in the UK. I had listened to Snoop quite a lot, and was a bit fed up with his manner. Then Dogg Pound hit the shops, and it is a must! It has some great kick ass bass cuts, and vibes. If you have a quality cd system in your car, and BIG speakers, play this at full throttle. the cd seems to keep going, and it's definelty one you can keep playing around. All the tracks are very cool indeed!.

This album is daz and kurupt at their best. As much as it pains me to say but kurupt, daz, snoop and dre will never be as good as they were on Death Row. This album has great guest appearances from rage, nate dogg and snoop. The first track [Dogg pound gangsters] hits it off and it gets better. Great production as Dre is the executive producer and this is a must have CD for any hip hop fan.
