4.0 out of 5 stars Great insight mixed with fun. 12 Jun. 2016
By Shani K. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
From the very beginning, Belle’s story made me smile. As I was growing up, we always had a dog. When you’re young, they can be the best entertainment and the most loyal. Often times I wondered what the heck Bud, Murfee, Zeek and Zara were thinking. Especially the time Murfee decided to eat our leather couch. Oh man, I’ll never forget the yelling that went on that day. Of course, Murfee just gave us all those sad eyes that seemed to be saying, “What? You left me alone all day. What do you expect me to do? Watch t.v.?”. I have to agree with Terry on this one, every dog has a distinct personality and probably thinks along the line of Miss Belle!

In the beginning Terry refers to herself as the “translator” and Belle is the “author”. I thought this was cute and sweet. Here and there are snippets from Terry to clarify certain things or add definitions. Other than that, it’s all Belle. In all honesty, I found myself giggling and became engrossed quickly. Belle and Terry held my attention and it was a fairly quick read for me.

Throughout Miss Belle’s advice and story it made me reflect on those pets from long ago. Was Bud really rolling in the mud because he was hot, or because he wanted to torment us as he ran through the house leaving a mess? Ironically, Bud didn’t mind the baths that would later happen after his mud race of fun. I cracked up when Belle said, “Water is for drinking not for being in.”. I’m sure most of my other dogs felt that way.

Belle goes on to bring to light the many inner working of dogs and why they do things. Things like the merit of face rubs, sloppy kisses and ultimatly the many faces only such a creative character can make. But, she also warns that it’s ok to let your person think they’re in control. After all, that’s what is expected right? The dog is to obey the master so to speak. Belle differs with that! She says you can be happy with the fact that they are only in control as much as you let them be. I think that statement has a lot of merit to it. After all, our beloved pets are just as spoiled as the others we love.

Positives:

I think Belle and Terry did an awesome job of explaining the life of a dog and their actions.

It’s wonderful how they explain that your person is different from being an owner. Because we don’t own living things. We enjoy them and keep them safe.

It has the right bit of humor to it mixed with some educational points.

Negatives:

I found it frustrating that I had to flip to the footnotes for explanations throughout the book. I know that it's the way many choose to do it.

Over all, this is a cute and fun book. It gives you some ideas of what they’re thinking and planning. So be wary my friends! There is more to that look in your dog's eyes than you think!

I give it 4 out of 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't find any dog advice that would be useful for a new dog owner 11 Jun. 2016
By K. Allison Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
A short lighthearted hilarious read! I personally have 3 dogs, two mini dachshunds and a Labrador, but am also a veterinary technician. This will sound silly, but pets that have been dropped off for a procedure usually leave the clinic with a voice that we have decided they would use. I didn't find any dog advice that would be useful for a new dog owner. I found it to be a cute interpretation of what we think our dogs actions are saying. I laughed out loud throughout the entire book. My family kept asking what was so funny so I was retelling many of the stories that cracked me up. My favorite was the vacuum and toy situation. My Labrador, Olive, behaves exactly how Belle was describing with it being rude to put her ball and toys away so I can push the noisy machine around. I also loved how particular dogs are about a toy. Once Olive selects her ball for the day, only that one will do. I always try and change it on her, just to see if she will notice and Belle address how dogs feel about this in the book, but she always brings back the one she started with. Anyone can enjoy this book, but those that have a dog would probably enjoy it more as they can make parallels with their own pet's behavior. Highly recommend reading this book, very cute! 5.0 out of 5 stars The World According to Belle... 16 Jun. 2016
By SueBiss - Published on Amazon.com

I truly enjoyed reading this book by Belle! I have often wondered what my dogs are thinking and Belle explains to us people what is going on in their minds. My Belle too loves to shred paper and chew everything I touch, no nail file, pen or pencil is safe in my house. Luckily Belle has stopped chewing my shoes, I am glad she has stopped that now since she is a year old. My other dog, Vozzy, gives me a look like "SHE'S is doing something SHE shouldn't, so don't blame me" I know my Belle is into something she shouldn't be. I can also understand and relate to all the interesting things dog do now that Belle has explained to me why dogs do what they do, well, because, they are dogs, not people. I love the part where Belle talks about hogging the whole bed and leaving us people a small stop to sleep in, I call that being a "Bed Hog" I have two dogs I share my bed with which leaves me even with less space to sleep in. Thanks, Belle, for being YOU and helping us people understand dogs better and for your translator being there to love you (and now, Delta) and for helping you tell your story.

4.0 out of 5 stars I truly enjoyed the light-hearted 17 Jun. 2016
By DOTRAZN - Published on Amazon.com

As a dog owner and lover of all canines, I truly enjoyed the light-hearted, thought-provoking insight that Belle provides for human counterparts. I loved how Belle is the true author of the book, and that Terry Kaye, her human partner, is her translator, and it lent the book an air of empathy and true understanding between dog and human. As I read, I reflected on our family’s recently deceased, well-loved rescue dog, a Japanese Chin named Brooklyn, who used to get nervous around strangers – human and canine—and occasionally made accidents in new places, unfamiliar to the sounds, smells and sights. Perhaps this was his way of saying, "I'm scared!"

I adored the way Belle and Terry used accessible language for all dog owners to truly assess the behavior of their dog companions, not as simply aggressive, or purposefully destructive, but to think about the motives and thoughts behind their actions. Perhaps this is how they’re trying to communicate with us! Anyone, of any age, can read, enjoy and get a lot of useful information from this wonderful, funny book.

“Life is a bowl of biscuits”. Being an avid dog lover and mother to both a tiny human and two canines, I was looking for a quick and easy read. Although I am probably not the target audience, I knew I would definitely want to read this book with my daughter, as she gets older. Belle (and Terry) is an excellent storyteller. This story was funny and lighthearted. At times I glanced over at my dog and wondered what exactly was going through her mind. Was she mad that I expected her to fetch that ball for the eighteenth time? Reading the mud puddle had me giggling. I swear my dogs will run through the mud and puddles all day long but as soon as they see me take out their bath towel and wash cloth, boy have they never run so fast in the opposite direction. The chapter on working the crowd could not have been truer. I always wondered what it was like for my dogs the day we brought our daughter home. They had gone from King and Queen of the house to second-class citizens. I think any kid and/or dog lover would enjoy reading this book.
