Product Description

Screwball comedy starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn as rival gym owners who compete against each other in a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament. Sweet, underachieving Peter LaFleur (Vaughn) is the proprietor of Average Joe's, a run-down gym with an oddball clientele. Despite its shabby exterior, the gym catches the eye of competitor White Goodman (Stiller), the power-hungry and aspirational owner of the gleaming, ultra-modern Globo Gym. Staging a takeover of Average Joe's looks to Goodman like a doddle - until the attorney from the foreclosing bank, Kate Veitch (Christine Taylor) is unexpectedly won over by Peter's boyish charms and decides to do all she can to save his gym from Goodman's clutches.

From Amazon.co.uk

How's this for impressive trivia: Dodgeball faced off against The Terminal in opening-weekend competition, and 29-year-old writer-director Rawson Marshall Thurber aced Steven Spielberg by a score of $30 to $18.7 in US box-office millions. That's no mean feat for a newcomer, but Thurber's lowbrow script and rapid-fire direction--along with a sublime cast of screen comedians--proved to be just what moviegoers were ravenous for: a consistently hilarious, patently formulaic romp in which the underdog owner of Average Joe's Gym (Vince Vaughan) faces foreclosure unless he can raise $50,000 in 30 days. The solution: A dodgeball tournament offering $50K to the winners, in which Vaughan and his nerdy clientele team up against the preening, abhorrently narcissistic owner (Ben Stiller) of Globo Gym, who's threatening a buy-out. That's it for story; any 5-year-old could follow it with brainpower to spare. But Thurber, Vaughan, Stiller, and their well-cast costars (including Stiller's off-screen wife, Christine Taylor) keep the big laughs coming for 96 nonsensical minutes. With spot-on cameos by champion bicyclist Lance Armstrong, David Hasselhoff, Hank Azaria, Chuck Norris, and William Shatner, and a crudely amusing coda for those who watch past the credits, Dodgeball is no masterpiece, but you can bet Spielberg was unexpectedly humbled by its popular appeal. --Jeff Shannon

I have owned the DVD for years, and its one of my favourite movies, so now I am starting to move over to blu ray with my collection, I thought it was about time to replace this movie with a shiny new high def version.
The film itself looks really good, but where this blu ray disappoints is with the extras.
On the DVD you get commentary, deleted scenes, alternate ending, dvd rom content, bloopers, featurettes & trailers.
On the blu ray you get theatrical trailer, fox on blu ray & websites.
For a medium that gives you more storage space, there is no excuse for all the extra features being dropped.
Most blu rays will have the special features in standard def, which is fine, so why they felt the need to gyp the blu ray buying public is beyond me.

Film gets 5 stars, the blu ray only 3.

Vince Vaughn's Character runs a small gym called Average Joes, it only has a few customers & he hasn't been collecting their membership fees & is steadily getting himself deeper into debt. Ben Stiler's "Globo Gym" however is a massive corperate gym. As Vaughn's business starts to go under Stiller reveals that he will buy up his Gym unless he can afford $50,000.
Vaughn & his small band of misfits (comprising of Stephen Root, AKA Milton from Office Space) set out to enter the ADAA Dodgeball tournment in Las Vegas. They win their regional qualifying match by default but soon learn that Stiller's team have managed to cheat their way into the finals.
Rip Torn (from Men in Black) joins them to train them, with hilarious outcomes. They are also joined by Christine Taylor (The Wedding Singer & Zoolander) & steadily begin to Beat the competition into a pulp until the unevitable showdown match between the Average Joes & Globo Gym.
I am really not a fan of Ben Stiler Movies but I loved Dodgeball. I didn't stop laughing & as usual Stiller's character is so far out, even I didn't find this one too much. The hair, the clothes, the voice, this character is fab!
This is deffinatley a great film to watch & I would recommend it.

This is a very funny film. There's no need for a plot summary as it's covered elsewhere.

Stiller almost steals this film as the maniacal narsistic White Goodman who owns the shiny superficial Globo Gym. His faux pas when trying to win the affections of the accountant hired

to oversee the bank's reposession of Vaughan's gym are superb. Christine Taylor (Stiller's wife in real life) does a good job of being the woman with brains holding the team together. Vaughan is ok as Joe the owner of Average Joes but as is

so often the case this movie shows his shortcomings as an actor.

Rip Torn is superb as the wheelchair bound coach who used to be the national dodgeball champion and his one liners and put downs

are worth buying the film alone for.

For me though it is the superb Alan Tudyk (who played Wat in A Knights Tale) as the treasure obsessed "Steve The Pirate" who steals the show. His ability to attack Vaaughan with a knife just for walkign by him and his superb pirate accent

and actions are very funny.

I'm not saying this is the funniest comedy out there and certainly alongside classics like Kingpin and Caddyshack it lacks something, but at the price you can buy it for (under ÂŁ6) it represents good value

This is a very, very, very silly film in the manner of 'Zoolander' and 'Anchorman', which come from the same or similar stables and have cast members in common. It's saved by quite a number of genuinely witty lines and some good-natured whole-hearted performances by a very good cast, headed by Vince Vaughn (macho, very good-looking and rather charming) and Ben Stiller (grotesquely over-the-top, which is just as he needs to be for the role). You can't help feeling a warm glow of pleasure as Vaughn's motley crew of no-hopers vie with and eventually triumph over Stiller's tough guys (and one girl) in the completely absurd game of Dodgeball. Good, too, to see the very game Christine Taylor, Stiller's off-screen wife, as a really nice bisexual lawyer deadly dodgeball player who can whip the legs from under a 6 feet 8 giant with one whisk of her bowling arm. Impossible to believe, but this is never a film that expects you to take it seriously. I must say I think 'Zoolander' and 'Anchorman' are better, but this is good fun and well worth a look.

“Dodgeball” is one of those films that will either delight or simply annoy the viewer and a lot will depend on the mood you’re in when you watch it. Fortunately for me at least, I was suitably relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the film and found it extremely original and extremely funny.
Peter La Fleur is the down to earth good guy who’s also the owner of a rundown gymnasium called “Average Joe’s”. His sweatshop doubles as the home from home for a right old motley crew of social misfits, whether it’s the guy who’s convinced he’s a pirate, the chap with the mail order bride who hates him or the high school drop out who still pines for his high school girlfriend.
Unfortunately for the business side of Average Joe’s just opposite is the mega modern gymnasium complex “Globo Gym” run by the vain self-opinionated and quite bizarre looking White Goodman. In a twist of the plot that is only there to orchestrate the point of the film Peter must assemble a team to compete in the dodgeball championship in L.A. to win the $50,000 prize money and stop the foreclosure of his Gym by Goodman. Goodman of course raises his own team and from there on in, it’s “Game On!”
As I say it’s an extremely silly and ridiculous film and if you’re not in an easy mood when watching it, the antics may well serve to annoy more than entertain. The humour is quite pantomimic and there’s plenty of opportunity to boo the bad guys and cheer for the goodies. Ben Stiller makes a great panto villain and his outrageous portrayal of Goodman is right on the money.
