Product Description

Review

'If all the campaigning rhetoric has left you cold, you can relight the radical fire in your soul with this blisteringly essential manifesto. Eminently readable and deeply inspiring' - Editor's Choice, Bookseller

'Do It Like A Woman is a compelling account of the ubiquitousness of violence and discrimination against women. It's full of fascinating stories and facts - Prospect

'Criado-Perez is having the last word, and it's a very eloquent and powerful one at that. As those who stick their heads above the parapet for the rest of us can attest all too well, it's likely that the online abuse will continue apace. But that's precisely what makes Do It Like a Woman so very essential' - Irish Independent

'Need inspiring? Do It Like A Woman brings together stories of kick-ass women from around the world who have shown great heroism and bravery. It's rousing and immensely readable' -- 'Best New Nonfiction', Good Housekeeping

'Striking... It is refreshing to read a feminist work informed by lives far removed from that of the author. Like any woman who is vocal in the public sphere, Criado-Perez has been obsessively threatened. She doesn't dwell on the experience, instead using her platform to shed light on the lives of others. There is bravery in that, too' -- Guardian

'Well researched and packs a punch' -- Sunday Herald
'A must-read... Put it on the curriculum' -- Sunday Irish Independent

'An inspiration to change the world' -- 'Best Summer Read' Elle

'A brave, heartfelt and necessary book' --Sunday Times

'An immersive piece of investigative journalism, strong on sound facts and figures, finding interconnections and then leaving readers space to draw their own conclusions. The pleasure of Do It Like A Woman is that it's about other women - their campaigns, their political interventions, their stories. In a world overstuffed with tedious me-myself-and-I-as-hero-of-my-own-narrative books, Criado-Perez has had the good sense to deliver an overview that grasps the essential impetus of feminism - as collective, connective action by a diversity of women whose voices are as brave and informed as Criado-Perez's. Criado-Perez shares some of the clarity and in insight of the young Shulamith Firestone' --New Statesman

'Young girls and women everywhere should have a copy as a reminder of how awesome women are' -- Bridget Christie, Guardian Books of the Year --Guardian

As a male and rather chauvinistic one at that, it's fair to say this book came as something of a shock.

I hadn't fully appreciated how ingrained gender discrimination really is in all walks of life..women seem to have a variety of barriers to overcome beyond whether they are simply as competent as males.

However it's fair to say that these women kick ass and men's asses at that!!..they are ambitious and determined.. something that should worry men pretty much everywhere..as it is clear that these women are successfully chipping away at the patriarchal system.

The fact that this male sometimes felt so uncomfortable reading his book is probably proof it is working.

I was totally gripped by this book from the moment I opened it. Totally inspirational and sometimes harrowing stories of the lives of women from around the world written in a way that was both educational and accessible. There were times that I had to put the book down in order to have a good weep - as the conditions and circumstances of some of the women in this book are just appalling. Somehow reading about the lives of individual women who have experienced such extreme circumstances makes the epidemic of injustice against women more real & it's because of this that I think that this book should be read by everyone. Somehow learning about a single individual's plight makes ignoring the huge injustices that seem so overwhelming harder to ignore. Beautifully written on top of everything else that is good about this book. I will have to read it again, as I feel I still have more to learn from it and didn't take it in well enough in one sitting.

Something struck me - when I was about halfway through this book - the realisation that I'd never actually read a book solely about women - just women...and *WHAT* women.

From the start of this collection of insights into the lives of these incredible women I was hooked, the way that Caroline links their tales is extremely subtle - the connections made easily. And it's a tough read in places, from the lives of the horrifically oppressed in the Middle East, exiled, terrorised, to the desperate plight of those detained in Yarlswood. But along with the reality of these life-threatening injustices are so many uplifting, heart-swelling tales of passion and determination of women fighting their own private and public battles to improve the lives and prospects for women the world over.

It is an inspiring read, meticulously researched and Caroline's respect and admiration for these women shines through. It made me want to know more about their campaigns, their fights. It made me wish I was doing so much more. It's a brilliant read, accessible and engaging. A really wonderful work.

Forget the bad reviews on this book as they're well off mark. Caroline doesn't need to write about the abuse she has recieved as it's already well documented. This book covers many inspirong women and their stories. They need to be read! Things need to change. Women need to lead the way. Men have had their chance over the past couple of 1000 years and messed it up! Inspiring women seen in this book really could make change happen.

As a western, privately educated, white, hetero male it is remarkably easy to be unaware that on my worst day I have it better than most of the people who's stories are told in this book and then writers like Caroline Criado-Perez or Laura Bates come along and kick down the walls of complacency a bit.

This book doesn't waste time and limit access by using the coded language of gender but in plain, well crafted words tells the stories of dozens of women around the world who are simply trying to live what should be normal lives and finding their way blocked by societies that, often unconciously sometimes calculatingly conciously, are shaped to favour we men.

I found it informative, I found it upsetting, I found myself angry that these smart people were being systematically shut down time and again. I found myself deeply uncomfortable when I recognised some of these behavious in myself.

The tragedy in so many of these stories was that even when many of the women win they still somehow end up being punished for their success.

Overall a valuable read and one that I hope will make me stop and think about whether I am treating the women I encounter with the respect they are due.

One of the key points of the book is that women are often controlled by removing their voice. I am impressed with Caroline's ability to give a voice to a range of women and issues. Brilliant read!

Inspiring, heartening and at times heartbreaking, Do It Like A Woman is for everyone who thinks outside the gender roles society tries to impose. I was blown away by the courage and tenacity of each woman interviewed in this book, and Caroline's easy storytelling style is wholly accessible.
