Really interesting ... a very, very good book (Steve Wright BBC Radio 2)

Inspiring ... sage and sane advice (Booklist)

Saying 'no' is a life skill. At last here's a book that shows you how (Heather McGregor, aka Mrs Moneypenny, FT columnist and author of Careers Advice for Ambitious Women)

Brilliant. If you feel stuck in the busy trap, this book will teach you how to do the right thing at the right time rather than trying to do everything all the time. A potential life changer (Jason Jennings, New York Times bestselling author of The Reinventors and The High-Speed Company)

A wonderful reminder of the tools we can all employ to manage our things to do in life - when you use Shaa's practical ideas, you will give yourself more time to do things you love to do (Terri Sjodin, Author of Small Message, Big Impact)

Simple yet devastatingly effective. Packed with tools and tricks to help you reignite your schedule, your days and your life (Gabrielle Bernstein, New York Times bestselling author of May Cause Miracles)

My guidebook on how to live a life filled with meaning (James Altucher, author of Choose Yourself)

About the Author

Shaa Wasmund MBE is one of the UK's most prominent female entrepreneurs and a champion of small businesses. She is the author of the #1 bestselling book Stop Talking, Start Doing and the founder and driving force behind Smarta, the UK's leading support platform for small business owners. In 2015 she was awarded an MBE for services to business and entrepreneurship, and the Institute of Directors named her as one of the best-connected people in the UK.

Shaa was educated at the London School of Economics, during which time she wrote for Cosmopolitan. After interviewing World Champion boxer Chris Eubank, he asked her to manage his PR - and while still at university she promoted Eubank's second world title fight (with 18 million viewers).

In 1994 Shaa started her own PR firm, with Sir James Dyson as her first client, and helped build Dyson into a global leader. In 1998 she moved into the digital world, becoming a founding director alongside Sir Bob Geldof of the early travel site Deckchair.com. She went on to launch her own social networking site, Mykindaplace, selling it six years later to BSkyB, before setting up Smarta in 2009.

I wanted to give the book three stars, but three stars stands for 'I liked it' while what I really want to say is that ... it was ok. But not much more than that. At least for me, who have read a few books on self-development and self-management. I picked this one before a longish train journey and I read it quickly. I think that is what it is - an easy, travel book. I picked it up intrigued by the cover reviews, such as this one 'Simple yet devastatingly effective. Packed with tools and tricks to help you reignite your schedule, your days and your life' or 'My guide on how to live a life filled with meaning'. It promised a lot! Unfortunately there were hardly any new ideas for me in the book. What there was was sleekly put together from various sources + some common sense - at least for a person capable of pausing, self-analysing and reflecting what doesn't work and coming up with ideas for change (e.g. switching off your phone, scheduling and prioritising, saying No, de-cluttering, open space, concentration and connection...). The book is like a good singer covering other artists - it's ok but there is very few original ideas.

The book is also painfully repetitive - it almost felt through the first 50 pages like sitting in a plane circling on the runway without taking off for a long time. It finally did take off but even as the book progressed, very often it was coming back to the same ideas over and over again.

I will take something away with me from the book though - next time I do wardrobe tidying-up I will apply the rule 'Would I buy it today? No? Get rid of'! :)

I have just finished reading this book and have read it from cover to cover which is unusual for me with a business book.

It is uncomplicated in style and easy to read meaning you can relate to it immediately. It doesn't get bogged down in academia and it doesn't try to be all grandiose like too many business books I have tried to read. Its power and impact comes from its simplicity. Practical, straightforward suggestions and actions that work. There was nothing particularly new here in terms of concepts; much of what it contains can be found elsewhere. However what I loved was the way it was written; accessible, friendly and empowering. Having read it I feel I have been given permission to stop being constantly busy and have already started doing less and getting more.

I knew before I read it that this book was going to be good, as I regularly refer back to the author’s previous work: Stop talking. Start doing. A kick in the pants in six parts.
I chose the kindle version because I was pretty confident I would be doing a lot of highlighting. The book had some excellent doodles and drawings that just mind map ideas and concepts into your head. For me the drawing of the crap magnet stands out.
The key points at the end of each chapter in purple also make for easy reference because the book is easy to read but less easy to follow. The book does not contain a single complicated or demanding suggestion but it is easy to get lost in the prose of this well written, clear and empowering book and to not act on it. The book is not an instruction manual or a life roadmap but a series of subtle suggestions which, as Jim Rohn would have said, are easy to do. Easy not to do.
As with so many female writers, there is an absence of ego. You are not made aware of the difficult circumstances under which the author has achieved much, as opposed to the style of "the world was against me and look what I have now". The title reflects two aims which are dealt with in the book, do less AND achieve more. Unlike many books of this kind, the author talks about having less stuff and being happier as a result. That is a hard one to grasp. Particularly if you were focused on the “get more” part of the title. There is nothing entirely original in the book, as concepts such as focusing on the main thing and eliminating distraction have been covered by many before but some may prefer this writing style. The author focuses on the emotional state you need to be in for better results to turn up. By thinking about what you need to do and training yourself to repeat this pattern, this book will help you to happily enjoy the fruits of your labours.

This book has really helped me to re-evaluate the way I prioritise my work/ life balance. Making time for what's important to me has, over the years, become more of a dream than a reality. But, after reading Shaa Wasmund's book, it is as if a curtain has been lifted and finding the time for the people I really care about has become so simple and easily achievable. I recommend this book to EVERYONE but particularly those who get so caught up in their seemingly endless to do lists they end up barely seeing or speaking to their friends and family.
