Review

An essential guide to the British monarchy for those who should already know everything but don't. Written with a lively wit but crammed with factual information, this is the perfect way to mug up on your British history (The Oldie)

One way we remember history is by means of a good yarn... Flude's gem of a book works on this premise - that it is the human stories of our monarchs we remember - and he breaks them down into delightful bite-sized chunks (Family History Monthly)

About the Author

Kevin Flude is the Creative Director of the Old Operating Theatre Museum in London and a lecturer at various universities. He has worked in the museum world for over thirty years, including the Museum of London and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He is also the Course Director for the Road Scholar programme in London, which provides study tours, lectures and walks on the history, archaeology and museums of the city.

Bought to help a history student remember facts/dates etc. and found myself dipping into it with great enjoyment and giggles. Have now bought several others in this series for other subjects, all well received.

A very interesting book but not one to sit and read all at one go, better to pick it up and read a bit and then put it down.

Bought this as my first down loaded book ever. I have always been a keen but amateur historian and this sounded fun to read on holiday. I completely enjoyed the easy flow of the book, keeping each king or queen to a paragraph made them easy but memorable. Also some of the lesser known stuff such as Cannut and the Jews.
I would recommend this to people who's children are daunted by the tomes that are normally presented to school kids to learn about our past. This is much more user friendly and will be sticking with me as a reference or just for a cheeky read from time to time.

I hope to find more like this as i go along.

I loved this book and would highly recommend it. Parts of the The Editors Introduction best sum it up for me - 'By deliberately keeping the entries in this book short and to the point, we hope to provide an accessible and entertaining overview of the sweep of British history that will perhaps renew a dormant interest in the subject amongst those readers who have not picked up a history book for a while..................we hope you enjoy reading these bite-sized chucks' of history'.

As I've recently taken back up an interest in, a subject I thoroughly enjoyed at school, this is perfect for me. Concise and succinct it has helped me with the order of successions. I found the bite-sized chucks just right and I got some good ideas for additions to my (already bulging) reading list! Well written and an enjoyable read.

Decent enough dipper book! Found it really interesting even though my interest in the history of the monarchy is average at best. Sometimes the structure of each section wasn't the best and it spoiled the longer story by writing the end of that monarch in the first line - at other times it repeated itself but in general it was well written and kept me entertained.

As the blurb says - British History in bite sized chunks.
The modern monarchs, particularly, are easy to read and most contain a (naughty?) fact or two that our history teachers didn't share with us. The way that this book is written may even persuade a reluctant teenager to have a browse - you never know!

Years since I've read a factual history book I found this book a joy to read. Delivers what it promises in easy to read bite sized chunks outlining the prominent facts in chronological order about the British monarchy.
While I read this for entertainment purposes only it would be really useful for history students as a quick reference guide and wish it had been around when I was taking history exams.
An interesting, entertaining and educational book and, at less than a fiver, excellent value for money - highly recommened.
