Two backcountry skiers find the body of a young woman embedded in the ice of a remote mountain creek. All through the night police work with arc lights and chainsaws to prise her out. Identifying her doesn't take so long. Abbie Cooper is wanted for murder and her picture is on law enforcement computers all across America. But how did she die? And what was the trail of events that led this golden child of a loving family so tragically astray? From the number one bestselling author of "The Horse Whisperer", master storyteller Nicholas Evans, comes this powerful new novel, an epic thriller of the human heart. In a journey of discovery and redemption, from the streets of New York to the daunting grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, it tells the heart-rending tale of a family fractured by divorce. "The Divide" is the story of a great love betrayed and of the yearnings and needs, and the dashed hopes and disillusionments that connect and separate all men and women.
From the Inside Flap
Ten years after his phenomenal number-one bestseller The Horse Whisperer, Nicholas Evans returns with his most powerful novel to date, an epic thriller of the human heart.
On a crystalline Montana morning, two backcountry skiers find the body of a young woman embedded in the ice of a remote mountain creek. All through the night police work with floodlights and chainsaws to extract her. Identifying her, however, takes no time at all. Abbie Cooper is wanted for murder and acts of eco-terrorism and her picture is on law-enforcement computers all across the country. But how did she die?And what was the trail of events that led this golden child of a loving family so tragically astray?
On a devastating journey of discovery that takes us from the streets of New York to the daunting grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, The Divide tells the story of a family fractured by betrayal and struggling in search of lost happiness. It explores the pain we inflict on those we love the most, and charts the passions and needs, the dashed hopes and disillusionments that connect and divide all men and women.See all Product description

As with all his books The Divide kept me reading into the early hours.Mr Evans knows how to draw the reader into the story. The plot, characters, the pace in which he writes is awesome. As well as this his story line is believable and realistic. It could happen to anyone. The pain and bewilderment of a dying marriage, the challenge facing teenagers and the way people influence youngsters.....and the easy path into trouble and the way back to redemption.I look forward to the next book written by this talented person.I am no author but I know a good read when I find it!

I never really managed to get into this novel: I'm more fast paced detective and this is more slow paced mystery. It was interesting, and the conclusion was surprising, but definitely not my normal fare. Good to try new things though.

One of the best books I've ever read. Bought this as a gift for daughter-in-law. Wonderful writing and a perfect, unusual story. I was utterly gripped and could not foresee the ending. Can recommend to anybody.

Gripping right from the start. Very good descriptions of the various family emotions surrounding the break down of a marriage with all the ramifications that lead from it.
