I was listening to this album songs when I was in the 9th grade and learning how to surf. I was always in a happy mood listening to these songs. Brings back good memories.
5.0 out of 5 stars 70's Jazz-Funk 28 Sept. 2014

Excellent Jazz-funk made under the direction of the legendary Donald Byrd. Even more impressive when you learn Blackbyrds was made by just a group of students.

old album but its good, kind of jazz/fusion but its good. This is Jazz at its finest, relax with a glass or wine or put on and play in the background for picnic, barbecue or while doing homework. Works like a charm.

4.0 out of 5 stars Let your mind be free... 15 July 2005

I can't believe this is only the 3rd review written on this 2-fer, blast from the past.

So you know, the 'Byrd' part of the name is due to these guys being understudies of the cross-over jazz trumpeter, Donald Byrd.

The Blackbyrds take the Donald Byrd direction of the mid seventies and make it chart and ear friendly.

As much as I love this stuff, it tends to suffer from that mid to late 70's sound from time to time. The stringy/orchestral bordering on disco sound.

That being said, Rock Creek Park and BlackByrd's Theme are 2 of the thickest funk jams I know.

They had a limited run, but you need to put these boys in the Kool and the Gang, Tower of Power range without apology.
