Product description

About the Author

Distortion is the second novel by Sheffield-based author Anne Grange. A lot has changed since I published my first novel Outside Inside and got stuck into writing Distortion. It seems like Distortion has taken a long time to write but sometimes real life takes over: buying a house (not with the proceeds of my first novel unfortunately) and a change of career. After finishing my MA in Writing, I launched my freelance writing business, Wild Rosemary Writing Services, so I’ve spent a lot of time helping other people to write their books: something I’m very proud of. I get quite immersed in writing my novels. I started learning the bass but now I’ve picked up my trusty Telecaster for the first time in years and have started playing in an all-women punk band! I decided that my character Jason should be obsessed by the Manic Street Preachers. I bought a few of their CDs second-hand and then got stuck in a terrible traffic jam with their first album on repeat, turning it up louder and louder. When I finally got home, I was a firm convert! I’ve now seen them several times and I now have a ‘Libraries Gave us Power’ tattoo – very apt in these dark days of public libraries under threat. I wonder where my third novel will take me?

I was carried away by this book. I know little about the world of bands and festivals, but the characters drew me in, became real, and I cared about them, wanted to know how they 'd evolve. The writing seemed effortless, although I'm sure it took a long time and many months to craft into such a fluent read. A real pleasure👏

I'm probably not the reader this book is aimed at but I really enjoyed it. The characters are realistic and the plot keeps you guessing to the end.

It goes all the way up to 11!

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. Told from two different points of view: Kaz K - former member of 90s band Mission Control and Jason - her fourteen year old son who has just discovered a love for music and playing guitar- this is a real page turner.

Can Jason overcome his difficulties at school and find out more about his mum's mysterious past and can Kaz/Keziah keep on their 'borrowed' house, Wren Cottage despite being a poor artist who is in hiding.

I loved wren cottage and the description of a small Derbyshire village- I wanted to move in straight away despite the lack of central heating and dodgy wiring!

And once Kaz and Jason decided to get the band back together I was on the edge of my seat? Would Pete and Ash be up for it and furthermore would they be free of the 'curse' of the 1995 Spiral Sun festival or would the gig at Bearded Theory be doomed too?

Fantastic depiction of the era of festivals and grebo.

Right, where's my dog on a string?

Good read, really enjoyed it, anyone with an interest in music and the festival scene should definatley get this, and if you're not, read it, you may find you want to experience it yourself. Drops one star as I'd guessed some twists and turns before I'd got to them, but this doesn't detract from a very enjoyable book and I'd recommend to anyone who isn't at the pipe and slippers stage of their lives
