‘Brave’ is a 3D platformer in the style of classics such as ‘Jax and Daxter’ from the PS1 era. Unfortunately, this game decides to keep many of the annoying elements of those games and forgets to add the stuff that made them fun in the first place. You play as Merida and must travel through levels based on the film; mostly woodland based. You come across platforms and bad guys; many can be dispatched using your bow and arrow. To add complexity to the game you also receive different magic for the bow that will trigger different parts of the level, therefore opening possibilities of replaying levels to find hidden elements. This use of magic is by far the best part of the game and proves quite challenging as you battle various enemies using the elements that they are most susceptible to.
The problems with the game are apparent almost everywhere else. There seems to be a rolling excuse that making games for a younger audience means that you do not need to try, but this should not be the case. ‘Skylanders’, ‘Disney Infinity’, even the likes of ‘Pac Man’ have proven that quality games for tweens can be made. ‘Brave’ suffers from a lack of ambition or attention almost everywhere.Read more ›
