The concept of having a figure that comes to life on a portal was first introduced by Skylanders, Disney have cleverly introduced a version of their own using Disney Characters. If you played Skylanders then Infinity is pretty much the same, place a figure on the portal and that figure comes to life in the game.
My boy of 9 loved Skylanders, wasn't as keen on the second version called Giants as it was to easy, he was bursting with excitement to get his hands on Disney's Infinity.
The Starter pack has three figures Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow, and Sulley which are very detailed figures.
You have the Infinity base, Play Sets for Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles, I tell you about the play set in a bit and one Disney Infinity Power Disc (Xbox 360/PS3/Nintendo 3DS/Wii/Wii U) which is a blind pack that unlocks different features in the game such as a new vehicle on toy etc.
The play sets open worlds, the pack comes with one which opens the Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles worlds, to open another you need to get your wallet out and buy another set of figures, we purchased the Disney Infinity Lone Ranger Playset Pack (Xbox 360/PS3/Nintendo 3DS/Wii/Wii U), the figures are very detailed. You get to play in an area called Toy box which allows you to create your own world where you can battle with any of the figures.Read more ›
Firstly, this IS a fun game which has been designed with a completely different play-style in mind.
Disney Infinity is very much about creating a 'Mine-craft/Little big planet' experience where a child can build an entire world in a sandbox environment, while playing through play-sets unique to each franchise to unlock items to use.
While Skylanders is about playing through a set storyline and leveling up your TOY to unlock powers.
The reason I believe Skylanders is better is listed below...
- The figures are amazing quality and worth buying a lone.
- Easy enough to pick up and play.
- Visually very nice and looks like a toy world.
- The sound and feel of the world does feel very Disney.
- The controls work great (for the most part).
- The scanning technology works great.
- The individual play-sets are quite lengthy (but quality depends on the franchise).
- The mine-craft/little big planet sandbox area has a lot of potential.
- Once you get through the training session, you are left completely un-guided as to what you do.
- As above, the quality of the play-sets can vary from great to boring.
- The 'discs' seem completely redundant; the stuff they unlock should be collected in game.
- Using the 'play-set' objectz to unlock mission areas seems redundant also.
- Extremely BAD controls on the CARS which makes the game simply frustrating.Read more ›
The game itself is great, it is right up there with my favourite games of all time including skyrim, zelda and mario. I first started on the toy box and I enjoyed a good 7 hours building a race track and then after I acquired mike and randy I headed out to monsters university, which was incredibly fun and will entertain you for hours. Although I haven't played the incredibles and pirates playset, I can tell that there is replay ability. I'm not criticising skylanders but you cannot replay it, it just gets tedious, whereas when I was shooting toilet paper at trees and paint balling big orange monster I thought that was it, but then I got a bike and wow. The next few hours I spent booby trapping my brother while we played split screen, albeit you have to buy extra characters I would highly recommend the heroes or villains pack which will get you started if you want to play split screen.
Buy this game for the toy box, TAKE MY ADVICE.
And p.s heres a tip when you are buying power discs you can scratch the discs with your fingernail through the packet and feel the holographic texture on rare power discs - I am now the proud owner of Dumbo the Flying Elephant.
On a downside, as the pack contains 3 characters from 3 different films you cannot play in duel player mode without buying additional characters as both characters need to be from the same film to play in that way. Similarly, the set includes the gameplay settings of the 3 films (Monsters Inc, The Incredibles and Pirates of the Caribbean) which means you cannot buy additional characters without also purchasing their "world" to play them in.
All in all though the positives far outweigh the minor additional financial annoyances and I am really impressed with both the game and the concept

This starter pack, in my opinion, is the best one out of the three. Every 1.0 figure has their own mini games in the toy box hub which is something unique to Disney infinity 1.0. Read morePublished 14 days ago by Alexei B.
