The story behind it is entertaining and well thought out and like previous titles offers hours upon hours of gameplay thanks to the item world and land of carnage features, but it also adds a cheat shop which unlocks as you progress though the main and post story levels, one of the many features lets you increase the overall difficulty of the enemies which adds another layer to the game without going onto the land of carnage option.
Filled with amusing dialogue and its traditional graphic style D2 doesn't fail to deliver on gameplay and enjoyment.
A lot of the new features work and I think NIS have finally found what they're looking for after some of the awful changes they made in Disgaea 3. The classes feel balanced, and the weapon system isn't as awful as Disgaea 3.
If you were turned off from Disgaea 3 and enjoyed 4 then definitely pick this up.
Most of all I'm looking forward to a mobile port in a few years running on the D5 engine. It'll certainly be worth it then. Sadly I don't have over 3000+ hours to sink into this game like I did with the original.
First let's get the negative out of the way first. If you are new to disgaea then welcome if you are a fan of games such as fire emblem or perhaps devil survivor then you will feel welcome here amongst SRPG fans. You will probably enjoy this story much more than I did and you don't need to play the first game at all to get into it as there are barely any references from the first game and a lot of the characters from the first game are missing. Gordon, Jennifer, Thursday and Kurtis. I have to be brutally honest the new sibling characters were not only not as interesting or funny but they felt extremely out of place with Laharl, Etna and Flonne that the clever comedy from the first was sometimes lacking when the new characters got involved.
You can overlook the plot holes and the new character's cliche design thankfully due to the great dialogue between Etna, Flonne and Laharl. The story is relatively short and you should be able to beat it within 25-40 hours depending on how used you are to the system I myself beat it in 30. A great new mechanic is introduced in the story where the main cast can chat to one another during battle unfortunately the main cast is only 4 characters. The story is still great overall and while I feel that ep 4 could have been expanded upon especially as there was a lot of hype for a character that only appeared shortly in one chapter. Also other fans feel it was a missed opportunity as well. However I do realise this is just a fan spin off to celebrate NISA's existence and to say a final farewell to Laharl, etna and Flonne so it was a great edition to the disgaea series. 4/5
Now with the negative out of the way I can focus on the rest of the game. Disgaea D2's story is only a small portion of the game and good news for those with less time to spare, the game is less time wasting but plenty of grinding to do still especially if you want to beat Baal. While it's sad to see the magi-change disappear which we had gotten used to from Disgaea 3 and the character world is gone. Mounting monster's replaces it and isn't exactly the best replacement it doesn't matter as other area's of the game have vastly improved. If you feel you are getting too much mana and want more experience or money then you can toggle on the meters at a new shop whenever you want without passing a bill and the same goes for raising the monster's level. LoC is unlocked after main story without having to do anything troublesome like find ship pieces and a new Raesetsu mode for those fans who find LoC too easy. Also more control over the item world! You can even control the floor sizes and to opt to remove geo panels for those of you who are sick of getting stuck due to enemies having an unfair advantage.
Great changes and the new revamped combo system is excellent too, it will take a while to get used to not being able to fuse or to magi-change anymore but the new abilities will make up for it. I hope to see this in the new disgaea, these are the best changes yet and allow you to focus more on actual grinding rather then doing the last 10 floors of the item world until your eyes bleed praying for a certain item to drop.5/5
If you like anime-style graphics you will feel right at home here and the sprites have been fine tuned even further. My only criticism is that for a certain story character I really wish they didn't make her design a generic character you can make yourself it was a huge waste as I love their character designs. 5/5
Haven't come across a bad NISA soundtrack before and this tradition continues and with the ability to randomise your tracks in the item world you will not being getting bored of them anytime soon apart from maybe the Rosenqueen shop, I have heard that track far too often. The soundtrack is just plain awesome as usual. 5/5
This is for those new to Disgaea it does spike a couple of times in the story but if you are planning to stop playing the game after you finish the story you won't have to grind much at all. I did a bit for the big bad just to be on the safe side but in Disgaea you can control how difficult you want to make the game. It can be as easy or as hard as you like. 5/5
If you lack time and want an incredible story with harder gameplay and own a 3DS I would advise you to purchase fire emblem Awakening another incredible SRPG. If you don't mind a time sink game and love freedom and variety then pick Disgaea D2 despite my criticism earlier it is a superb game. If you can pick both. 4.5/5
It is still today the most rewarding game purchase I've made.
