As is explained in the quite excellent introduction to this book, it is likely that Machiavelli wrote 'The Prince' in order to capitalise on a very specific political moment in which the Borgias had seized control of Rome and it seemed possible -through ruthless absolutist government- to rid Italy of the French, Spanish, Swiss and Holy Roman influences that had hitherto divided it so bitterly. As you may well be aware, this opportunity fizzled out fairly quickly but the work didn't and quickly took on a life of its own. Hence Machiavelli's present shabby reputation.
This new edition will hopefully go some way to rectifying this regrettable mistake and will hopefully go on to inspire many lovers of Freedom today, as it has inspired me.
A couple of notes:
Firstly it is not required that you read Livy before this work, as the annotations go along way to satisfactorily explaining any ambiguities. However, since finishing this work I have found myself picking up 'The Early History of Rome' and enjoying it immensely.
Secondly I just wanted to note my appreciation of OWB giving this edition its proper name of 'Discourses on Livy' rather than the unrepresentative and unnecessarily dumbed down title of 'Discourses' that many other editions publish thus under
