To me this album has the spirit of the Cure within. The Cure circa 1980-82,their most morose and dark period.
It still has Katatonia's metal crunch throughout but is where they created a kind of gothic-alternative-doom,much better than their earlier more derivative works although the first two albums are still great in their own way.
On the re-issue there is a great eleven minute track,Scarlet Heavens from 1994,which shows,in the bands own words, their earliest gothic period.

Not as instantly to the extreme fan as some of their earlier works, this is an album that is in essence a GRUNGE album. The guitars are very Bush-esque, and the vocals sound remarkably like early Cobain, or even Rossdale. However, the keyboards add some real atmosphere, and this in turn make the album almost perfect. A must have for any music fan, although fans of more extreme music may wish to seek out their earlier stuff.
