This box contains quite a wide spectrum of musical performances, from the horrible to the great. It never really gets to the unforgettable level, but occasionally surprises with some unknown gems from the cellars or attics of baroque music. Given the documentary value, I feel that this box can be worth it for the baroque lover. I bought it for Euro 25,00 and I feel I got my money's worth. Here's my take on what I heard:

CD1, Bach, Goldberg Variations, Leonhardt
Breaks the metrum all the time, probably in an attempt to make the music "more interesting". But he exaggerates and almost plays different rhythms than what's written. I sometimes got the feeling that he must have been drunk, honestly. For baroque this is a no-go. I'll gladly have Gould's perfectionism even though he doesn't play on a period instrument. But at least he gets the spirit of baroque right.

CD2, Bach, Motets, Cantus Coelln
Instruments are there but can hardly be heard, because the voices dominate everything else. Also the female vocals dominate the male ones. Performance wise, there are brief moments where parts of the ensemble start to “run ahead”, resulting in a slight feeling of chaos. Still, above average performance that could have been good or even great with the proper mixing or mastering.

CD3-4, Bach, Suites for Solo Cello, Hidemi Suzuki
I was really surprised by Suzuki's take on the Cello Suites. His interpretation is devoid of romantisicm and lyricism, just like I like it. However, he treats the music with the utmost respect, and what I hear seems to be tenderness towards it. No harsh notes, no exaggerated dynamics, just a downpour of heavenly motifs sewn together to a mostly meditative whole.

This is a very good box indeed. It is an edited version of the 50th Anniversary Box issued by DHM in 2008Deutsche Harmonia Mundi 50th Anniversary Edition [50cd]. Half of the original 50 CDs are included here, so you get 25 CDs of wonderful early music from Lassus to Boccherini performed by first-rate musicians. I have listed the contents of the box at the end of this review. Most of the CDs in the box are still available individually and have more detail on their individual pages. (You may also find it helpful to look at two Listmania lists I drew up which beweeen them show all 50 discs in the original box:

and
http://www.amazon.co.uk/More-CDs-in-the-DHM-50th-Anniversary-Box/lm/R1U3GH8EFWH9F3)

This is an excellent and varied selection of composers from the very well known like Purcell, Monteverdi, Bach and Vivaldi, through the less famous but familiar like Frescobaldi, Sainte-Colombe and Zelenka, to the downright obscure. It is all delightful: the musicians are uniformly excellent, and include such great names as Gustav Leonhardt, Cantus Colln, Christopher Hogwood and so on. They give fine performances both of the familiar works and of the less familiar ones. Obviously there will be discs you like more than others and you may already have favourite versions of some works, but these discs are never less than very good and are often outstanding. I have enjoyed them hugely, and some discs here have introduced me to wonderful new repertoire which I have gone on to explore with immense pleasure.

At this price the box is a real bargain.

Despite the name on the box this is serious Early Music more 1770's than 1970's and a lot of it (25 CD's) for the money.
Just what I wanted and not disappointed. I have just dipped my toes in so far but the results are fine. The overall sound is excellent but rather Teutonic ( full and bold rather than subtle and beguiling ) but that is to be expected from Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.

Eventually I will probably like most of the discs and "give it 5" but for the time being at least 4 Star.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good box 3 Dec. 2013

This is an excellent and varied selection of composers from the very well known like Palestrina, Monteverdi, Bach and Vivaldi, through the less famous but familiar like Frescobaldi, Sainte-Colombe and Zelenka, to the downright obscure. It is all delightful: the musicians are uniformly excellent, and include such great names as Gustav Leonhardt, Cantus Colln, Christopher Hogwood and so on. I have enjoyed them hugely, and some discs here have introduced me to wonderful new repertoire which I have gone on to explore with immense pleasure.

At this price the box is a real bargain. It is attractively and sturdily presented with each CD housed in a cardboard sleeve with a facsimile of its original cover. The one problem is the notes. These are at best basic and occasionally inadequate - for example on some CDs some musicians are not named and on some others not all tracks are individually listed. It's bit irritating but the music is so fine and at such a low price it's just a minor niggle.

If you have any interest in Early and Baroque music, don't hesitate - it will repay with years and years of pleasure. Warmly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful collection 11 Nov. 2013
By Vinylspinner - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This box contains some of the best historic informed performances, so although well known will not be redundant in your collection. The performance of Vivaldi's Four Season alone is worth the cost.

A perfect Christmas gift for any music lover. Buy it for yourself or someone you care about.
