Product Description

From the Back Cover

YOUR WORST DAYS ARE NEVER SO BAD THAT YOU ARE BEYOND THE REACH OF GOD'S GRACE. AND YOUR BEST DAYS ARE NEVER SO GOOD THAT YOU ARE BEYOND THE NEED OF GOD'S GRACE. We know we need grace. Without it we'd never come to Christ in the first place. But being a Christian is more than just coming to Christ. It's about growing and becoming more like Jesus-it's about pursuing holiness. The pursuit of holiness is hard work, and that's where we turn from grace to discipline-and often make a big mistake. In The Discipline of Grace, Jerry Bridges offers a clear and thorough explanation of the gospel and what it means to the believer. Explore how the same grace that brings us to faith in Christ also disciplines us in Christ. If you've ever struggled with what your role is and what role God takes in your growth as a Christian, this book will comfort and challenge you as you learn to rest in Christ while vigorously pursuing a life of holiness.

The Discipline of Grace is a wonderfully clear explanation of how God's grace frees us from the impossible task of being self-made people. The central idea of this book is that grace is the key to enjoying the freedom that is offered in the Gospel of Christ. This is without question one of the most helpful and encouraging books I have ever read. It would be an excellent read for the Christian who struggles with guilt or having an assurance of their salvation. It would also be a good book for a seeker who wants a better understanding of how the gospel of Christ should be applied in practical living.

I had to read a certain amount of pages for a class in Bible School. I was looking through the library, when "The Discipline of Grace" caught my attention. I thought, how can those two terms go together. Well the author certainly gives a different way of looking at God's grace. I checked it out of the library and started reading it that night, I could not put it down. It is that interesting. The point I remember the most is, we live a disciplined life because of God's grace and not to recieve grace. It is God's grace that gives us the freedom to attempt to live a disciplined life. The Grace of God can not be obtained by what we do, it is a free gift and it is that free gift that enables us to live a disciplined life. The disciplined life is the kind of life that most closly lines up with what the Lord lived as an example in the Gospels and what Paul and the other new testament writers wrote. I would strongly suggest this book for anyone who does not q! uite understand what God's Grace really means.

This is a must-read for every Christian. It is so easy for us to be 'saved by Grace' and then spend the rest of our timing 'living by works'. This books helps to understand that we are to live by Grace and that our call to holiness is enabled through the empowering of the Holy Spirit to make the right choices.

Please, please, please buy this book and read it. I know you will be recommending it to those around you.

But with this book it needs to be understood that most Christians and churches do not effectively preach about the grace of God (receieving Christ's reward for perfectness, in your sinful state). And most Christians can not tell you what it is, as such this book clears up alot of the muck, false doctrine and works based mentalities that currently exist. Believe that this book would be beneficial to you it's not a book every Christian should read that is the bible. But this book makes the bible even more clear. The writer is not one giving you new inspiration from God or a new thing he has found but rather expounds on the scripture to make clear that which has become murky. Reading this book I understood that Romans solely is about the grace of God. But praise be to the Most High God who gives the grace for us to be part of the priviledged few.

A book which brings together the concepts of Christian discipline and the freely given grace of our Father God. As the book says, these are often seen as being diametrically opposed, whereas to live a truly Christian life both are needed. We cannot earn our way into heaven - Jesus has already provided the way - but without discipline how can we become more holy?
The book is written in an everyday style, no need for a theological degree, but on the other hand Jerry Bridges does not hesitate to tackle the truths of how far we fall short of the holiness God wants us to aspire to and its practical outworking, not only in our lives but in those of the people around us.
