Although the music will be familiar to many it is really pleasing that this excellent concert has been released on dvd. The music quality is fine and the picture quality has obviously also been worked on. I am not concerned that the blue ray version may not be up to the usual standard or that the screen format 4:3 may not appeal to many, just that the concert is now available in a digital format. People really have to remember that it is now 27 years since this was recorded so it can't be expected to be as good as a modern equivalent concert.
This appeared after the band had recorded 4 studio albums. There was a, therefore, a large amount of material that could have been performed. The tracks chosen are a good cross section at the time and pre-date the hugely successful "Brothers in Arms" and "On Every Street" albums. This is the band in an earlier, less commercial phase and every band member appears right in the zone. It really is a classic concert and will be an excellent companion to the "On The Night" dvd. In particular the version of "Romeo and Juliet" takes on another dimension compared to the original studio track. "Tunnel of Love" and "Telegraph Road" are also highlights, but really the entire concert is superb.
The extras included are 2 studio tracks recorded for television at the time and a very interesting documentary. The 8-page inlay also gives good retrospective information. All in all an excellent package.

Make no mistake, this is Dire Straits at their very best! They show with effortless ease just how polished they were as a band and what consumate musicians they are! I have owned the cassette tape, the cd (twice), the VHS video and now this dvd and have never tired of listening and watching them!
The only (very personal) complaint is that in producing the dvd some of the 'in between bits'have been cut: I really miss Knopfler's drawn out "Thaaaaankyoooou' after Private Investigations leading into Sultans of Swing; but hey ho, you can't have everything!
If you like live music and some good old fashioned foot stomping, get up and dance rock, then buy this dvd!
5 stars-great stuff.
The point is though, the picture is perfectly watchable and is still a big step up from the VHS you saw this on in the first place. The sound quality on this DVD is absolutely right on the money. You can hear things going on here that you've never picked up on the audio versions, Vinyl,CD,Cassette or otherwise. you literally are placed in the crowd.
There are some great reviews on here regarding this item so I have no need to go into any great detail as I would simply be repeating what others have said. I can wholeheartedly recommend this item to anyone who enjoys music and for fans of Dire Straits I would say it is an absolute essential for your collection.
You also get a cool sixty minute documentary filmed while they were recording Making Movies, it's interesting in hindsight to see them only eighteen months into their success, worried about how long they would last. It's full of live performances of their early stuff, and also in the extras are a couple of BBC performances from Old Grey Whistle Test, not exactly rare but welcome in this quality nonetheless.
Picture wise, people are right to say it hasn't improved particularly from the original VHS; it's clear and more than adequate, but in the age of high definition doesn't exactly push the boundaries of restoration. They also left out Love Over Gold from the concert, which isn't that great a loss since they only played three minutes of it. Otherwise, this is the band in all their glory, probably their prime, and anyone into the first four albums will enjoy it.
