From the Author

Format: Paperback
Once again Berridge delivers an informative and accessible work on the subject of diplomacy. The book however, is handicapped by the authors admirable ability to keep such work accessible to readers who may not be familiar with the subject. For those with an advanced understanding of the theory and practice of diplomacy this would lead to a sense of wanting for further indepth analysis. The book claims to be 'essential reading for students and professionals alike'. This goal as with most other text books that make such claims can not have it both ways. For this reason i can not give it full marks on account of this contradition. The book should either be aimed at students of diplomacy in which case more explanation is needed on for example, the theoretical justifications for the granting of diplomatic privileges and immunites, or more indepth advice that could be used to guide the professional. In conclusion this book will serve as a valuable resource for students. Its aim of producing a textbook which is aimed at both the professional and studnet alike, often leads to a confused sense of who the author is writing for. This sentiment however, should not be allowed to undermine what is obviously a well considered and researched textbook.

I am currently completing an MSc Global Governance & Diplomacy at Oxford University, and thus far I have encountered no other book which describes the actual nitty gritty of diplomatic tasks and activities in such detail. G.R. Berridge shows his mastery of the subject matter with evocative anecdotes and case studies, embellished in fascinating and more often than not humorous detail.

The book follows a logical structure, and I recommend it as an essential read for any student of diplomacy, or indeed for anyone who is interested in the history, development, and current functioning of diplomacy - both nationally and internationally.

Format: Paperback
This is a great textbook for students of International Relations who want to have an idea of what Diplomacy is and what it does. All the theoretical information backed with real world cases, which help to understand various processes. Easy to read and understand, relatively short paragraphs.
