I bought two of these for use in the bedrooms of a holiday cottage. Because I knew the flex wouldn't be long enough, I thought I'd take a peek inside, to see if I could fit a new one, rather than having to have a joint in it. There's no terminal block for the flex; it has crimped terminals and pushes onto the switch. Plausible to replace, but the plastic grommet doesn't look re-usable and would probably need replacing too. So, on the off-chance anyone else was wondering, that's the answer ;-)
There are two heating elements; they are flexible wires, like the sort of thing you find in an electric blanket (or maybe under-floor heating) and are stuck to the front panel using aluminium tape. Each element is protected by a non-resettable thermal trip, rated at 125ºc. There is a fixed thermostat (of the type you'd find in a central heating boiler), also mounted on the front panel. It operates at about 85ºc, according to my made-in-China IR thermometer. (You can hear a light click from the thermostat when power is applied and a louder clunk when it is removed.)
The rear panel temperature never exceeded 30ºc in my tests.
I noticed that the thermostat operates repeatedly at predictable intervals. Heat is applied for around 50 seconds and removed for approximately 90 seconds. The *average* power consumption is therefore not 800Watts, but a rather miserable 286Watts. (50 / (50+90) * 800 = 286). This would explain why some people have criticised the amount of heat this unit produces. I did my tests in a very large conservatory and the heater did nothing whatsoever to the ambient air temperature - which remained at 12ºc throughout.Read more ›
Easy to fit and looks great , I have this linked up to a Sol*Aire thermostat for wireless receiver, and it's a real class act together
Out of the box it is very easy to put the feet on the base of this model, even though the instructions could be clearer - there are no screws in the tiny plastic sealed bag for putting the stands on the base of this machine as these are reserved purely for wall mounting. Instead on the base where the fixed feet go, one screw on either side of the Dimplex DXLWP800 has already been screwed in, only requiring an average sized crosshead screw driver to undo the tiny screws and fit the fixed feet on. As the photo on Amazon UK shows, there is a slight angle to the way that the feet present the Dimplex DXLWP800 but for the price, I get a much better made panel heater here that has softened edges and there is a red rocker switch that acts as the simple on/off button.
There are a few downsides to this product being a panel heater - it can't be used for drying anything on, warning that nothing can be covered over it or draped over - but there are ways around this such as using a small low level towel rack provided that the side vents at the rear don't get covered up.Read more ›
Previous reviews give plenty of warnings about the low heat output ... and the fact that it is only good enough to complement the main heater in your room, especially if the room is medium to large in size.
I have found it useful in my small bedroom during the night, where it manages to take the chill off without the more powerful wall heater being turned on. This will obviously save me money in the long run.
Despite the low heat output, the panel gets very very hot. It would therefore probably not be a good buy if you have small children or inquisitive pets in the house.

Does what it's supposed to. 800 watts isn't much but its a reasonable background heater in a small room. Quality is ok.Published 9 months ago by S. Green
