There's no denying it, this is basically a fancy fan heater - but that doesn't mean I don't love it. I bought it to replace a very cheap halogen heater which broke after a few uses. That heater was functional but hardly aesthetically pleasing. I had planned to replace it with something similar but sturdier... until I saw this. I was instantly drawn to the unusual cube design and fantastic red colour. I'd never seen anything else like it. I wavered over the cost vs a halogen heater but went for it in the end and don't regret it.

The first thing I noticed on using the Micro Fire was the noise from the fan - an obvious difference from the silent halogen heater I had before. However I soon got used to it and it's no louder than my laptop's fan and quieter than the whirr of my projector. When the TV's on you won't even hear it.

One of the best things about the Micro Fire is its compact dimensions. You could fit it anywhere - even stand it on a surface if you want to. I have it snugly tucked under a small table and it looks great. I thought the switches being on the back might be a bit of a struggle in this position but it hasn't been a problem feeling around to find them, and anywhere else would have ruined the sleek look of the product. Yes, the switches do mean you do have to get up to change the temperature but that's hardly a drawback. You do the same with real and gas fires after all...

I've seen some reviews that are a critical of the heat output of this little gem. This has not been an issue for me at all. I live in a one bedroom flat with an average sized living room. I can feel the room start to get warmer as soon as I turn the fire on and after a couple of hours on full blast it gets very warm in there indeed.

UPDATE - I've seen this 'in the flesh' today and it's a cherry red / crimson - better, to my eyes, than a standard bright red as in most pictures. If I'd known that, I would have got the red one and not the black one.

No reviews of the red one as yet, so here's my overlong review of the black version if you need an opinion...

I like jokey gadgets, and this certainly fits the bill. A fake fire in a round-edged, retro cube. (Well, almost a cube.) The fan heater is only 1.5kw max (most are 2kw), so not particularly quick to heat a room, but ours was for a small summerhouse anyway, so fine. So that we could use the summerhouse in winter, if you see what I mean.

INFO - 3 settings, via the 3 rocker switches located at the BACK, near the top, so you need to be able to get your hand behind it: flame effect only / 1kW+flame / 1.5kW+flame. However, there must be a couple of bulbs inside (replaceable, says the handbook, but a bit fiddly) as the fire casing / front glass is rather warm even with the fan heater turned off. The fan is slightly noisy, as you'd expect, and the same whether set to low or high. 1 year guarantee.

The glowing coals effect is great, but let down by the cheapish flame effect on an unrealistic WHITE ! background. However, that's part of its retro, camp, kitschy charm. Surprisingly, my wife really likes this - the flame effect and the whole concept - and it gives us something to look into, apart from each other's eyes, when we're in our Friday night summerhouse garden love nest, which also doubles as a chill-out bar. (Don't take the love nest bit too literally. We DO have certain standards.

When I saw this electric fire flickering away in the electrical department of a well-known department store I knew I had to have it. I then went home and ordered it from Amazon as it was cheaper and could be delivered to my door. It really is aesthetically very lovely and rather cute. It is light-weight, so it is easily portable and can be moved anywhere in a room or from room to room. It also does it's job well with two levels of heat and the flame effect works independently and can be used just to make the room look cosy. Another plus is that it can fit well into either a modern or traditional setting. In fact, as you must have already guessed, I love it.

I've copied across my review of the identical red version. (I actually have the black one.)

(See last para for more data.) However, there must be a couple of bulbs inside (replaceable, says the handbook, but a bit fiddly) as the fire casing / front glass is rather warm even with the fan heater turned off. The fan is slightly noisy, as you'd expect, and the same whether set to low or high. 1 year guarantee.

There are on-line videos of the flame effect, but make sure you watch the right one - the bigger effects from the same manufacturer look better and more realistic (and the expensive ones even now have 'smoke', which I think is actually real steam), but this fire has a basic effect. I'd personally be happier with glowing coals and no flames.
