This is essentially a perfectly standard mains timer.
Set-up was fairly straight-forward, although you do need to remember to charge the internal battery overnight first.
On the matter of the battery, this is useful in keeping the programming / timing information if removed from the power (for example, you need good lighting to programme the unit, as the LCD display is relatively basic and does not have great contrast or a good viewing angle, but inevitably the unit will typically be used in an area with poor lighting, so you don't want to lose the data when moving the unit!). Past experience with other battery backed-up units does, however, suggest that the battery is likely to have a limited life-span.
The point another reviewer made about going from 'Off' through 'Auto' to 'On', or vice-versa, is from my experience the way all similar timers work, so is perfectly acceptable from my viewpoint.
The unit seems to work reliably once programmed, switching on and off as expected.
The only 'minus' mark I would have for these units relates to the point made earlier about the poor quality of the LCD display - you do need good lighting and to be close to and looking directly at (not at an angle to) the display to be able to read it.
