- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2025This is a must-read for anyone looking to make sense of digital transformation. Unlike many books that just hype up the latest trends, Dr. Bottke digs deep into the real challenges and opportunities organizations face when going digital.
The research is solid, and the insights are highly relevant, offering practical advice on how to avoid common pitfalls when making tech investments. The book is packed with real-world examples and strategies to reduce risks and align technology with business goals.
The conclusions in this book are clear and impactful: digital transformation is not a one-size-fits-all journey, and success lies in careful planning, understanding risks, and aligning technology with business objectives. If you’re looking to navigate the world of digital transformation with a clear, realistic approach, this book is for you.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 April 2025A great book that explores the world of digital transformation and how to make it truly pay off. Tim emphasizes the importance of evaluating technology investments just like any other business investment. He also explains how the transformation needs to be CEO driven and not just passed to IT.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2025Well written and genuinely useful content. Recommended
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2022This book is a terrific asset for senior leaders as they prepare for and execute digital transformations. So many implementations of digital technology “go sideways” and don’t achieve their business case… this book offers practical advice and robust frameworks to ensure that efforts pay off.
Particularly interesting for me is chapter 7 on waterfall vs agile. Bottke makes a compelling argument that Agile (done wrong!) is a powerful value destructor, and that a hybrid approach is needed.
This is a thoughtful perspective and much recommended!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2023I bought this book with much enthusiasm. However, as I waded my way through, it dawned on me that this was more of an academic compendium than a practical book that was useful for businesses.

This book is just excellent - this was based on an actual Doctorial Thesis, so a LOT of research came through this, which really add credibility to what the author is discussing.
This topic is VERY timely and critical. These types of "digital transformations" can be Career-makers AND Career-breakers, so every executive really needs to pay attention to what are the ways to maximimze the likelihood of success = which is really in delivering on initail Payday promisse, vs just another "cool and modern" tech being created or rolled out.
Highly recommend.

Jonas Sveistrup SøgaardReviewed in the United States on 21 March 20235.0 out of 5 stars I always want to the hedgehog
Dr. Bottke's book on the value of digital transformation is the right balance between usual management books and real rigorous academic work. I find the tone both sharp, direct, and filled with humor.
The framework presented in the book is a great tool for discussing the components of digital transformation and ensuring there is no quick fix, but context is key!
So, if you are tied with books that have a guide for everything without many nuances, this book provides details and rigor communicated directly!
Well done!
