GREAT LITTLE BOX.

Great little box that overcomes the problem with my new Samsung UE49K5500 TV (along with most other newer smart TV's I gather) that there is no headphone socket. I can now carry on using my Sennheiser TR130 wireless headphones. It has also enabled me to continue to use my fairly old Panasonic home cinema system, and by that I mean that I can output the TV sound into the Panasonic for better quality audio, as the Panasonic only has the old phono type inputs and the TV only appears to output audio from an optical audio connection (Toslink?). Now I think I understand that this box converts a digital signal to analogue, and I don't know if I am not getting the best from my TV, but I am happy with the sound quality and it has fixed my problem without any more excessive expense. It appears solid in construction, but obviously with all things electronic, only time will tell. Certainly done the trick for now. The little instruction book is not the best, but comes with USB power cable (I have powered from 5v USB in the back of TV) and optical cable. I've had to use an extension for the USB and got a 2m optical cable to locate the box in the place where it is most practical for me, but for the money it's a good buy.

For what I paid I wasn't expecting but man this little thing blew me out the water, 9 quid for a DAC that sounds this good! Detailed with good 20Hz to 19KHz response and it's surprisingly very well built too, it even had screws holding the little PCB in place. I would recommend a dedicated power supply rather than the USB from your TV/ computer/ console for best audio quality.
The bad:
I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my particular unit, but as you can see in the pictures my oscilloscope shows some pretty aggressive clipping that starts after 50% volume on my PC. For that I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5. I'd suggest you keep the volume on your TV, laptop or console below 50%, clipping is very obvious when you hear it, it sounds very grainy and fuzzy so if you hear it, just turn the volume on your source down.

Opening it up you can see it's got a very pretty and well laid out blue circuit board held in place by two screws, digging deeper we see the Cirrus Logic 8416 digital audio receiver IC and the little chip numbered C344 which I believe is the DAC chip, I think it's a Cirrus Logic CS4344, a 24-bit a fairly decent digital to analogue converter, the only thing I dislike is the "CapXon" branded capacitor used as a filter for the +5v power supply, that'll likely be the thing that will fail first.
Conclusion:
Great little DAC, sounds good if you keep the volume of your source under 50%, well built and has a 24bit DAC, best bang for your back optical DAC I'd say.
