Covers aperture/shutter/ISO along with exposure compensation and image size and quality well enough. Some poor quality control in the manuscript and the author's attempt at chummy writing sounds a bit condescending.

Very basic book for very new beginners to photography, it is laid out well and does give some good examples but that is a far as it goes

5.0 out of 5 stars + Well-written Guide for Beginners 29 May 2014

There is a lot to like about this book--especially if you are just getting started with digital photography with a SLR.

▲ Mr. Woolf does a good job of explaining the details of image quality, and how it relates to number of pixels. Similarly, he discusses the technical details about aperture settings and exposure.

▲ The lighting section is especially good. The book describes many of the mistakes that beginners make, and how to rectify them. Hint: Don't miss the "put the napkin over the flash" tip.

▲ I especially liked the "15 Hacks" sections right at the beginning. I did not know about the important of indirect lighting versus direct lighting. I bet a lot of readers will make that same mistake.

After the "15 Hacks" comes the Introduction. Having the Intro come after another section confused me; in fact, I thought at first the 15 hacks might be the entire book. Of course, there is much more to the book than the initial 15 hacks section.

√ Nice book--good intro for a beginner; probably too basic for more advanced photographers. Recommend!

It was a good introduction. I could have used a couple of more chapters. There are a few things that are different between film and digital to think about while taking pictures.

Informative and easy to digest. A quick look. Not meant to be a whole photography class, just basic information.

The book is easy to understand and is a quick start for a beginner. It explains all the fundamentals of creating great photos without being to lengthy and boring! Straight to the point and I can refer to it easily if I have a question or just plain forgot how to do something. I recommend this book to any beginner who is ready to step outside the automatic comfort zone and use some manual settings.....its easier than you think! Thank you for writing a "hack" book!!
