Paul Harcourt Davies book is one of the best on macro photography ,that I have read in recent years. It provides an excellent introduction to the subject as well as providing a lot of ideas on lighting and post processing etc., for the more experienced. I certainly found the sections on noise reduction, sharpening, Light Room and image stacking very useful. As well as his suggestions for making up some simple focussing benches and gadgets, without breaking the bank.

The illustrations are of a very high quality and sufficiently diverse as not to discourage the beginner, yet encourage the more experienced to improve and extend their technique.

I firmly believe, that as an amateur, if you can't photograph a subject in nature without disturbing it or its immediate environment then don't. So am a little dubious about the section on micro aquariums. But it is very well written and the author does stress that the subject's welfare comes first, and gives advice on minimizing stress etc., - moving on!

I have always regarded his earlier work "The complete guide to Close-Up & Macro Photography", along with John Shaw's "Close ups in Nature" and Paul Hicks "Photographing Butterflies and Other Insects" as the three best books, that I have read, on the subject. Digital Close-up Photography may well become number four and represents brilliant value at the current price on Amazon.

This provides some useful information about this specific type of photography. The author is very experienced in the subject matter and is not too technical. Not particularly inspiring but a good acquisition if you are interested in learning more about close-up photography.

Just started on my macro journey and although I wanted to learn as I went there is always going to be questions. I loved this as it didn't give me a step-by-step guide from start to finish - I could play about and answer questions as they arose. Much easier for me who is a 'doer' rather than a 'reader' and so easy to get the information I needed - look up my question and get the answer - no need to read through other stuff that wasn't relevant to that particular issue. Will definitely keep this as a hints and tips book as I can refer back quickly and simply again and again.
