I can really recommend this book especially for artists- it gives an informed and readable run down of Photoshop, but where it is really good, is that there is just enough information for those of us who want to extend our way of working into digital, even experienced digital artists will find things of interest in here.its detailed information but not too wordy and definately not dry. There are beatiful colour examples of digital work, from very different artists, some more painterly, others coming more from a photographic background. best of all, its easy to read without dumbing down, and a beatiful book to own, either from a reference point of view or just to look at all the different artist's work and be inspired.

This book contains a lot of useful advice, but I found it difficult to love! I think perhaps it tries to cover a bit too much. It deals with basic artistic concepts like line, shape, value, colour etc., using Photoshop, composition, using a tablet, personal style, mixed media and in the process provides the reader with a lot of useful techniques. I think some topics are not entirely necessary or covered too thinly. For instance, there are many books on Photoshop and the coverage here of how to use it is quite basic. Framing is 'covered' , but only half a page is devoted to it, so it's hardly worth the effort. My main problem, though, is perhaps a personal issue. I just don't like much of the finished artwork! With a book such as this, you want to see a piece of art and think "That's amazing...how do I do that?" and that just didn't happen for me here. It doesn't inspire, so I had to work quite hard reading through the text to look for ideas that I could use to do things in my own style. I found quite a bit, and I wouldn't give the book a low score, because it DOES provide useful guidance, but I found reading it more of a chore than a pleasure.
