To give her children an example of how the world is changing and using technology, mum plans a trip to the smart city of Digita.
There is a chance to discuss the many ways that data is being collected around them on the journey to smart city.
The shop they go to gives you lots of examples where you can ask questions about the technology involved.
This is a great technology learning book and is a great learning tool for children. There is a nice story line running through it. It was easy to read and the information was laid out in an easy to read style with plenty of opportunities to question the children. The pictures are brilliantly illustrated too.
There are lots of technical words, but each is highlighted and explained well - these are words that younger and younger children are being exposed to in everyday life, so thought it was really good to present them in a fun but educational way.
There are points of interaction throughout the book so that when reading, we're also able to discuss the topics and relate them to real life. This is a great way to involve the reader and cement the information given.
The illustrations in this book are simple and clear which the younger children will be able to engage with whilst an adult reads through the information.
A great introduction to tech which is perfect for our ever changing world.
In Smart City, we follow Ava and Chip on a learning and physical journey to learn about digital technologies and how they are changing the world around us. It covers everything from the devices we have at home like smartphones to technology in shops like sensors, and how these interact with each other through technology like GPS and data sharing.
This is an excellent book, and it even cleared up a couple of things for me! The book builds up information slowly, putting important terms in a bold font or highlighted boxes, and relating everything back to devices and activities that children will find familiar. It’s aided by wonderful illustrations and wonderful characters in Ava, Chip, and their mum.
This is a must-have resource both for primary school educators and parents/guardians at home.
Throughout the story there are questions to discuss and also explanations of technical language that are helpful for both children and adults.
It’s an interesting look at what the future might hold and the very real fact that it’s not all the fantasy that we thought in our own childhoods. The jobs of our children may well not exist yet.
This will be a useful tool for schools to use as part of the digital teaching.
Bought the paperback for my ten year old daughter and she read it through with me and tackled the poser questions. At dinner she explained to her mum and brother what till-less Supermarkets are and how they work.
Quote for the review "I didn't know what a Smart City was before and I didn’t know the difference between data and information - now I do! 😊😛". (She actually now does - we found Grandma's house using the what3words app - straight away she could tell me that the three random words were just meaningless data, but knowing they are keys to a location turned them into information - you don't get that from a Janet and John book!)
A second reading for this review was a spring board for a critical discussion about data and privacy. Thanks, this is a welcome addition to the home collection.
Looking forward to many more in the series!
What a great book to share as a family. Our children’s generation are growing up surrounded by technology, I know my own children are much quicker learners than myself when using technology.
I love how the technical words are in bold through out the book and the illustrations are very modern. The story of Ava and Chip follows them as they go on an exciting trip to Smart City with their Mum. Their mum teaches them all about different kinds of technology and how they work.
