We live in the Twilight Zone, or I do!
I learned about this album 5 day's ago whilst Googling David Lee Roth!
I am a life long Van Halen fan and following the tragic loss of Eddie Van Halen I dug out my collection of both Van Halen and the might DLR and revived my love of both.
So, because I didn't own a copy of ' A Different Kind of Truth' featuring the return of David Lee Roth, I bought a copy.
Man, am I glad I did!
This album stands up there with 1984 and Skyscraper. I'm hooked from the first track 'Tattoo' and David doesn't disappoint with his lyrical interjections on many of the tracks.
The base line of most tracks on this album are classic Van Halen. Punchy, nut grabbing rhythm and pace. I got a really good feeling from this album which drives me to listen to it repeatedly. A good sign of a great album.
Love DLR Humour which lives in this album!..........Stay Frosty!

DLR back in Van Halen....a dream or a nightmare? As a long time VH fan I wasn't sure at all about this at all. I mean really? DLR back in Van Halen!!! It just couldn't work, could it? Well guess what - It DOES ,and infact A Different Kind Of Truth is one of this VH fan's faves of all time...honestly! Here's why...
Firstly, any new VH album is to be welcomed and the fact that Diamond Dave and the Van Halen brothers have kissed and made up is a joyous thing. To hear them pick up where they left off in 1984 as though they've never been away is simply incredible and just goes to prove that musical chemistry is an unstoppable force that no amount of bitching and fighting can extinguish. These guys make a noise that quite simply inspires, entertains and matters...to a hell of a lot of people, me included.
Don't get me wrong - I love the Sammy Hagar stuff just as much and hope he'll front the band again one day but it's always been two different Van Halens that have co-existed. I know Gary Cherone kind-of filled in for one album, which was sort of OK-ish, but there are basically two versions of my favourite band and it's either DLR or Sammy,or both, depending on how I feel at the time.
'Tattoo' may not have impressed Sammy Hagar or indeed much of the musical press but it's catchy as hell and as modern sounding as it's classic Dave . 'She's The Woman' sounds like it's as familiar as anything from their debut album .'You And Your Blues' proves that Mr.Roth can still sing like the dog's proverbials and 'Blood And Fire' is an emotional rollercoaster for VH fans....I mean "I told you I was coming back..." it's lump in the throat stuff guys...
"Outta Space" is frantic Van Halen II, "The Trouble With Never" is classic DLR solo and "Stay Frosty" seems to be most people's favourite from the album...like a new take on "Ice Cream Man"
Whatever the future holds for Van Halen this is an essential part of the bands back catalogue now and already seems like an old classic.
I think if a Van Hagar reunion ever happened it would have to include Michael Anthony and I can't see Eddie sacking Wolfgang .So the current Roth-fronted Van Halen line-up may hold the key to the band's future. On the evidence of this record that may not be such a bad thing.

When Diamond Dave left the band 28 years ago, things were starting to head south - but a certain Mr Hagar pulled Van Halen up by the bootstraps, that is, until he thought that he was bigger than the band. Mr Hagar, in turn, gave way to Gary Cherone but that, as they say, appeared to be that and Van Halen shut up shop 14 years ago with a back catalogue of rocking tunes and us, the listening public, left wondering how we were ever going to get any new material from one of the most iconic bands that the USA had ever turned out..!
Well, other bands came and went and then there was the very recent news that 3 Van Halen's and a Mr D.L.Roth were doing some small venues in the US and that these, while short, were intended as a precursor to the release of a NEW ALBUM...and then, before you know it, "Tattoo" is being played on the radio and then, deep joy, the album itself tumbles onto my doormat.....straight into the player, get "Tattoo" out of the way and......BINGO! Van Halen are back, in all their majestic glory......well, not quite, but after 14 years, this is as good as it gets with riffs and screeching solos aplenty all backing up the voice that can only be Diamond Dave's! - just missing the odd ballad just to counterpoint...but I'll take this for now and look forward to the next release which will be the killer!!
For sure, this is not the best album that Van Halen have put out, but nonetheless, it is a good rocking album from masters of the artform!

OK - cards right out on the table. VH were a big part of my musical youth (which is more than can be said for Musical Youth) - back in the late-70s and early 80s I saw the Roth incarnation twice and they will remain one of my all-time faves.
Forget the Sammy years (much as I loved most of it) or VHIII, we are discussing the return of Diamond Dave. The world has turned through trash-talking, substance abuse, reunion tours and more rumour mill than output - yet here we are.
So what we got? Dave's wise-cracking crazy Zen wisdom? Check. A rehabilitated EVH firing on all musical cylinders? Check. A thunderous rhythm section? Check. A bunch of 70s songs redone? Semi-check. This is a brave and interesting step backwards to go forwards and it works much better than you would think. You do need to give the album a fair crack of the whip as it's not too immediate -repeated plays will reward though.
I didn't really get 'Tattoo' at first but as with everything on here, it's a grower. There's nothing to compete with say 'Runnin' WIth The Devil' or 'Unchained' or 'Romeo Delight' but it's good, good stuff and considering all the water under the bridge, it's amazing this record got made at all let alone as successfully as this. I do miss Mike though.
I was all ready to forget the whole thing as for a few years there it looked like they had p*ssed their legacy and reputation away. Now - if they tour the UK, I'm there! Some people made points about the sound quality and I would agree with that unfortunately. EVH through 21st century technology should equal eyebrow removal at 20 feet this is a little too compressed for my tastes. What would Ted have done???
