Review

'Different Drumemr is a fine and searching study of Macmillan's life and work - admirable in its scrupulous detail as in its understanding of the subject ... a remarkable study in the nature of a powerful creative talent.' --Financial Times, 12 September, 2009<br /><br />'Jann Parry's new biography of [Kenneth MacMillan] is at once an assiduously detailed history of the man and a psychological deconstruction of his work ...Parry's compassionate account enables us to approach it with new understanding.' --Observer, 20 September, 2009<br /><br />'Jann Parry's magnificent life of [Kenneth MacMillan] ...Through astute observation and exhaustive research Parry, a former dance critic, delivers not just the life of a choreographic genius but also charts the history of modern British classical ballet.'
--Daily Express, 2 October, 2009

Jann Parry has written a biography on the grand scale, as extravagant as any of the ballets she describes it is not just a labour of love, but, one feels while reading it, an offering, an homage to the power of dance. --Patrick O Connor, Literary Review

Jann Parry's riveting biography ... Meticulous, authoritative and unflappable, Parry has done an excellent job in elucidating this fascinating but somewhat tirsesomely self-centred and over-sensitive man. Her authoritative biography will join Julie Kavanagh's portrait of Ashton and Meredith Daneman's of Fonteyn as primary sources for the study of British ballet. --Rupert Christiansen, The Spectator

Book Description

This is the first complete biography of one of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century – a hugely gifted man, often thought an outsider and plagued by anxiety.

After reading 'A Different Drummer' it's difficult to imagine a ballet-going life without it. Like Julie Kavanah's biography of Frederick Ashton, it will become an invaluable reference each time one re-visits a MacMillan work. I have admired this man from the 1960's onwards, and I believe there is still no one (with the possible exception of John Neumeier) who has captured his 'bite' and his artistry in surprising us just when we are relaxed into thinking we know what he's going to do. Jann Parry has masterfully fleshed out MacMillan's work with the printed word; oh, but one wishes for a DVD to visually bring to life especially some of those early ballets. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

I first read this book when it was first released. I recommended it to my students who also bought, read it and loved it.
Jann Parry has produced a book that is meticulously researched and therefore invaluable to anyone wanting to know more about the genius of MacMillan as well as documenting British and International ballet history during the period.
This copy I bought for a friend (who is briefly mentioned in the book) and she feels that the book does absolute justice to both MacMillan's talent and legacy.

A must read!

Good account but it hasdispelled my awa of MacMillan. There are gems in what he created but there were a lot of failures. The insight into ballet and the workings of the Royal Opera House abd peiplke around MacMillan is illuminating..

I paritcularly wanted this book as I am a balletomane and regard his ballets as the works of a genius. He obviously had a tremendous knowledge and understannding of human nature but never decries nor demeans it. Instead we become involved with the characters in his ballets in a way tht makes us care what happens to them Both the text and the photographs are compelling and for me it has become a coffee table book.

I found this biography very interesting and easy to read, even though I am not a regular ballet goer. I would recommend it to anyone interested in any area of the arts. It is very well written and beautifully presented. Great gift for Christmas or any occasion! It now has a lovely Kindle version which is fantastic as the hardback is a bit heavy to carry around.
