Die Wolke is an ideal book for students of A level standard or for people generally interested in reading german literature. It has an addictive storyline, its fluidity is not hindered by overly complex language and colloquialisms. It is at a good level to be able to learn some new language/vocab without being tedious to get through.

A really good book, although quite difficult to read if German is not your native language (the book is designed for German teenagers). However Pausewang doesn't hold back and the book is very honest and definitely beliveable. It follows the story of a young girl after a huge nuclear disaster in Germany and is set in the 1980s although is still relevant today. A good meaningful read.

This is a German text originally written for German teenagers but was an the syllabus for my German literature A level. The book concerns the lives of a family in a nuclear disaster. It portrays their fears and sadness during the crisis, their attempt to escape and when they return home. It is an exciting and moving book which I would recommend to any German speaker of the required standard.

1.0 out of 5 stars Luddite anti-nuclear propaganda 14 Mar. 2011
By Martin Hübler - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
In her introduction to the book, the author compares the dangers of nuclear energy to those of national socialism; and calls for resistance against the 'ecocide' perpetrated by the 'atom mafia'. This alone should be a warning sign about the content - which is straight-up propaganda masquerading as a children's book.

I was forced to read this book in school as an 11-year old (more than a decade ago). It gave me prolonged bouts of nightmares; predictably, it took me at least half a dozen years to be able to rationally assess nuclear power and to be able to point out the numerous manipulative techniques that 'Die Wolke' employs in order to associate nuclear power with mass murder and just about anything that is evil.

It is a tear-jerker that is designed to elicit strong irrational emotional reactions, written for an audience of primary-school age. Do not give it to children or teens, it might engender both emotional trauma and uninformed political indoctrination.
