Product Description

From the Author

The Dictionary of Liberal Thought ranges from Lord Acton to
Mary Wollstonecraft, anarchism to Whiggism and contains more than 170
entries, covering key thinkers, ideas and organisations. It shows how
liberalism has served as the crucible for apparently disparate
philosophies, from socialism to the conservatism of Edmund Burke.

In timescale the Dictionary of Liberal Thought stretches as far back as
ancient Greece and Rome, but mainly covers the period from John Locke in
the seventeenth century up to the present day, with entries for figures
such as Will Kymlicka and David Marquand.

The entries are fully cross-referenced and come with bibliographics and
suggestions for further reading where appropriate; those for individuals
include a mini-biography. For easy access the entries are also listed in
separate indexes of thinkers, ideas and organisations.

The Dictionary of Liberal Thought contains contributions from almost a
hundred academics and politicians, including Ralf Dahrendorf, Michael
Meadowcroft and Keith Robbins. It has been produced under the aegis of the
Liberal Democrat History Group, which promotes the discussion and research
of historical topics relating to the histories of the Liberal Democrats and
its predecessor parties, the Liberal Party and the SDP, and of liberalism.
The LDHG organises regular discussion meetings and publishes the quarterly
Journal of Liberal History and a series of reference books.

Format: Hardcover
The Dictionary of Liberal Thought is a welcome addition to the field of literature available on Britain's third party - a field that has been extremely quiet these last few decades. Articles are concise and informative, and the bibliography for each one greatly enables further research and reading. The selection of authors is impressive, and all articles are written clearly.

The greatest gripe I have with the book is that it doesn't include leaders of the Liberal Party and its successors after Grimond - something I feel would be enormously helpful in charting out the direction of travel for the political organisation that has embodied the values documented elsewhere in this volume. I would hope to see that rectified in a future edition.
