Product Description

The acclaimed, best-selling Japanese grammar dictionary series now complete! A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar, the third volume in the widely-acclaimed, bestselling Japanese grammar dictionary series, is designed to introduce students of Japanese to advanced-level Japanese grammar expressions and help them deepen their understanding of the critical and subtle differences in meaning and usage between the target expressions and other synonymous expressions. Following the same format as the previously published volumes, A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar and A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar, the book offers approximately 230 Japanese grammar items that are believed to be highly important for students striving to master advanced-level Japanese and also for instructors who teach Japanese at that level. This book is especially useful when reading advanced-level materials such as newspapers, professional journals, technical/business/legal documents, academic papers, and literature.

All 3 of these books (beginners, intermediate and advanced) are brilliant for Japanese learners. If like me you are learning Japanese at degree level they are invaluable for formal writing. Each grammar point is clearly explained with a concise English meaning and then the formation is set out. There are lots of example sentences to put the grammar in context. Similar grammar is also explained with the often very subtle, differences in formality or context explained. They even give you example sentences where the grammar point has been used wrongly.
You can look up a grammar point in English in the index in the back, or in Japanese. It will give the page number and the book if the grammar is in a different level of book.
I browsed the bookshop in Japan thoroughly before I bought these, and despite the steep price (and weight) they are well worth the investment. I've finished my degree now but I can't bring myself to part with them, as they're a really interesting read, and there's still so much grammar I never learnt!

The delivery was very quick and the book arrived in perfect condition with some additional information on other texts you can purchase in order to improve your language skills, as well as specializing in certain aspects of the language such as working in the business or science industry. The book itself is very useful and like the previous books, it explains the grammar in a context relative sense with translations that help relate between both languages.

HASH(0x8edad390) out of 5 stars The Best (English) Text for Advanced Japanese Grammar 5 Mar. 2011
By Yankee Samurai - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This text will, admittedly, be challenging to use IF your proficiency in Japanese has yet to have reached the point to where you can fully digest the material within its pages properly. If it is sufficient, however, you will NOT find a more comprehensive and useful text on the U.S. market for beginning about the challenging process of acquiring a strong understanding of "advanced" Japanese grammar. I purchased my copy when it first hit the shelves in Japan and still reference it today. It is a fantastically well-done work of scholarship!

I do not make this assertion lightly. I have taken and passed Grade 1 (1 kyuu) of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and enjoyed the great blessing of having had been able to have had trained in Japanese (the school's first language) at the Defense Language Institute in beautiful Monterey, California (Where I, incidentally, earned my first degree and became a DOD-certified Japanese linguist).

Please remember. . . Japanese is not like Spanish or French. It takes a VERY considerable investment of time, effort, and personal treasure (or, if you live a charmed life, that of your sponsor) to acquire a functional proficiency in it--still more, for a working proficiency. Don't rush it. Just as you have to go through the basics in mathematics before graduating into algebra and beyond, so too, must you in your language studies (all the more, if that language happens to be Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Pashto, or Chinese!). If you try to hit the highway too soon, you will likely wipe yourself out. (You could become discouraged or, worse still, get into the habit of speaking atrociously bad Japanese, because you haven't properly mastered the basics yet.)

HASH(0x8e225f9c) out of 5 stars Not so user friendly but ok 3 Mar. 2011
By Guru bound - Published on Amazon.com

I found this one and the rest of the set not so user friendly at first but after getting into it and getting to understand how it is set up, you can find what you are looking for but still some things needed more explanation because of ambiguity in the English language.
