Product Description

Product Description

Legendary late-night TV show featuring historic performances by music legends, now on DVD.

•10 episodes, with almost 9 hours of footage, on 3 DVDs. •Long regarded as American TV’s most intelligent talk show, The Dick Cavett Show gave the Woodstock Generation a reason to stay up late. •When Cavett joined the late-night talk show parade in 1969, his intelligent wit pumped a much-needed breath of fresh air into the format. •The show offered guests a forum for controversial opinions and didn’t shy away from topics such as women’s liberation or the war in Vietnam. The show also became the late night home of rock ‘n’ roll, with a guest list that reads like a who’s who of the era’s top performers. •Revealing interviews and classic performances. •Includes Janis Joplin’s final TV appearance, two months prior to her death and a 20 year old Stevie Wonder performing the title track from his album ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ just days before its release.

If you have a serious interest in the rock music and (counter) culture of the late 60s / early 70's then this comes highly recommended. Dick Cavett's show was unique on American television at the time in that it gave a serious forum to rock musicians on Prime Time television. Dick Cavett was a an intelligent humorous interviewer who did not pretend to be hip and did not patronise his guests. Instead he laughed with them and at himself while putting artists of the status of Jimi Hendrix , Joni Mitchell , John Lennon , The Rolling Stones ,Janis Joplin etc at their ease and managing to elicit interviews that give a real impression of their personalities and a true flavour of the times. There are also some great live in the studio performances.
Highlights include Crosby , Stills and Jefferson Airplane on the show literally hours after their appearance at Woodstock (Stills - 'look , Ive still got my mud!') , Janis Joplin and a very weird unsettling interview with a clearly stoned Sly Stone. Please note the Hendrix interviews and performances , which are fabulous , are not on this set but have been released on a seperate DVD. Also note there are also non-music items included in the shows.
Also Jefferson Airplane manage to get the first use of the term 'motherfu....' on National TV!! - Ed Sullivan show this isn't!!

I bought the DVD pack because I like Dick Cavett, but mostly because the brilliant Janis Joplin is on them, but overall the shows and guests are enjoyable.
