'Diamonds In The Dirt' is the second stunning album by spiraling blues star Joanne Shaw Taylor who is again given licence to thrill on her Fender Telecaster at Bessie Blue Studios in Tennessee with legendary producer Jim Gaines who records 10 new breathtaking original gems featuring Steve Potts on drums, Dave Smith on bass, Rick Steff on keyboards.

'Diamonds In The Dirt' captures Joanne Shaw Taylor on fire with a collection of love songs expressing her hopes and fears forged from crash and burn experiences on her journey through life since her widely acclaimed debut album White Sugar. Cue acoustic guitar and deep smoky vocals like the quiet before a storm on 'Can't Keep Living Like This' and wait for the whirlwind to follow that emanates straight from her scorching Fender Telecaster and thunderous rhythm section that simply blow you away! Nearly two years on from her last outing and this young lady needs to get a lot off her chest as she exorcises the past with 'Dead And Gone' and sings of finding "New life in this fight" on 'Same As It Ever Was' before moving into overdrive and telling of a brave new world on 'Jump That Train' that is a real bone shaker! 'Who Do You Love' delivers some her finest guitar licks to date leading into the title track 'Diamonds In The Dirt', a love song which brings her smoky voice to the fore that is winning awards like Best British Female Vocalist at the 2010 British Blues Awards and it's fair to say adding female musician and songwriter to that accolade wouldn't be far from the truth!

I saw this album advertised on the Planet Rock website, and sitting in front of my PC at work, drifted to Amazon and bought it off the cuff - and Never has an impulse buy been so happily received.

From the image i was expecting something a bit Sheryl Crow; light, slightly mischievous and fairly easy listening.

What I got was proper dirty blues rock riffs, great gritty chug, fantastic solos, all aged and tempered by Taylor's deep, angsty, smokey voice. From the opening "can't keep living like this" you know what your in for, and it's all groovy.

The whole album sounds brilliant on the surface, but on a song-to-song basis each track stands out on its own as a bit of gritty musical genius. If music is there to carry a sensation and emotion, this album gives you both in buckets.

I discovered this amazing new artist and her White Sugar album totally by accident, thanks to Amazon. I only noticed this new album was coming a few days ago and pre-ordered it on the spot. I must admit I was totally blown away by White Sugar, with the uniqueness of her voice and her stunning playing I just can't understand how "unheard of" she still seems to be. But when I saw this new album, I did also wonder if maybe she'd just fluked a flash in the pan success with the first one. How good would this be?

Well, any tiny fears I may have had were totally misplaced. The disc turned up this morning and I haven't even finished listening yet, but I just had to come and say how brilliant this is. 2 minutes in to the first track, she had shivers running up my spine, and it just gets better and better after that. This is the kind of music where even on the first listen, you just feel so comfortable and relaxed with it, it seems like you have been hearing it all your life. And that is in no way meant to imply it is a repeated stock sound. It just fills your ears and washes over you, and it is a rare and wonderful feeling.

This lady has an amazing talent and original sound, is destined for great things. Do not hesitate to add this to your blues collection. And if you don't have White Sugar, that is a must-buy too.

Fantastic music. Hope the neighbours like it! :-)

Update having heard it all: Best track? Hard to pick one, they are all good. But Lord Have Mercy swings it. Blinding guitar.

As with all the best artists new to me, I first heard Joanne on the Paul Jones show on Radio 2, where she was playing three of the tracks on this album in session on Dec 13 2010. There were hints of Janis Joplin and Alison Moyet underlying her stunningly distinctive voice, and her guitar work showed great breadth from subtle and delicate to heavy rocking blues. I was impressed! So I immediately ordered the CD, which was going to take a few weeks to be delivered, and you can imagine my expectations building steadily as Christmas and the New Year passed.

But can you believe my stunned reaction when two of my CD players said 'No Disc' each time I tried to play it? Instead of being the usual shaving mirror silver, it is shiny black on the play side, and neither the Marantz CD nor the Denon DVD (both hooked up to the hi-fi) could see it. In desperation I tried it on a few computers, but no go for either drive in each of the two big XP machines in the house; now I've gone through puzzlement and disappointment and I'm growing angry. At last, on the fifth machine tried, this old W2K laptop, it plays! My anticipation, building for the last three weeks, and scorched by the frustration of the final ten minutes, has been surpassed.

I might be tempted to compare Joanne with Ana Popovic, another superb blues/jazz/rock guitarist and singer, and only a few years older, but they are also so very different. You can hear they have come from different backgrounds, and are approaching the Blues from different directions. There is room for both in the Blues world, and both are most welcome in my CD collection.

She plays all the guitars, except bass, and sings all the vocals on this CD where she also composed all the tracks. This is showcasing her talent; there are no bad tracks, just some are better than others. See Joanne Shaw Taylor's web site for lots more about her.
