Review
'We have here a fine resource for students and for the interested general reader. Trudgill's explorations of vernacular language and his critique of 'linguicism' are erudite, socially relevant, and accessible.' Lesley Milroy, Professor Emeritus of Linguistics, University of Michigan
Book Description
Trudgill's lively book traces the histories of dialects and accents, and defends the legitimacy of the language of ordinary people.

For anyone interested in language, this book reveals all sorts of connections and differences in our language in an engaging manner. I find it difficult to put the book down - one thing leads on to another.

Being Norfolk born this was a must. My sister has studied linguistics so the book will be passed around the family giving us an insight into our language.Once picked up i read one third of the book in my first sitting! interesting to anyone who wants to learn something about how language and dialect continue to develop.

As a linguist, I found this book very interesting and I think it would appeal to anyone interested in languages and dialects. The author reveals numerous fascinating facts and does so with humour, which makes it an easy read.
The reasons why I'm only giving it four stars and not five are that:
there are a number of editing mistakes, which is surprising considering the topic;
the author almost always uses "which" where, in my opinion, "that" would be more appropriate;
instead of "try to" [do something] he uses "try and", which I think is wrong (does that make me a prescriptivist? ;o).
Whatever the case, I highly recommend this book.
