Buddy Killen, an upright bass player who worked with the Grand Old Opry band (and slapped some heavy country bass on George Jones' classic cover of White Lightning), and founded the Tree Publishing Company met up with Joe Tex, an incredible Texas soul singer, and decided the time was right to merge country and soul music. After several less than successful forays into radioland, Joe Tex had a massive hit with Hold What you've Got, and Killen had a successful small label, Dial. Dial was distributed by several different national labels. Killen used several famous studios, including Fame and Muscle Shoals before he established his own The Soundshop in Nashville TN. with its own superhot studio band featuring Reggie Young on guitar and Tommy Cogbill on bass.
This CD features several of Joe Tex's most famous songs including I want (to do everything for you) and I Gotcha plus a wide selection from lesser known acts such as Jean Knight and Clarence "Frogman" Henry--the others are even more obscure--and while the recognizable hits are few and far between, the songs really should have been hits. Soul in America in the 1960s had one of those wonderful moments, when song after song was so good that great songs were often passed on simply by chance. Still, this collection is flat out great and I would recommend it to any lover of contemporary American music.
