The card has the same height and width as a credit card, and is about the same depth as two cards piled together. As a storage and transportation device it's generally a good thing.
What's not so good are the tacky labels the card is covered in. On the front, the label is given over entirely to branding. On the back, there are the beginnings of a good idea with a series of boxes for writing disk details on. Unfortunately, the potential amount of space for labeling is drastically cut down by the inclusion of a QR code (in the middle of the last 4 label boxes, reducing their size from just over a centimeter across, to a pointless < 5mm) and a repeat of the brand logo, accompanied by the firm's contact details.
However, considering it's just a piece of plastic about the size of a credit card, I was expecting a little more for the price.
The micro SD card slots don't retain the cards other than friction - no click to secure or release as you'd get in a proper device.
Secondly, the space to write information about a card is only around 1cm square, and could have been a lot bigger considering the rest of the space is taken up with the product name that's already on the other side.
Finally, it would have been a lot better if it wasn't made in almost exactly the same colour as the memory cards you'd be storing in it. They just don't visibly stand out when pushed all the way in. Simply making the plastic light grey would have been an improvement, so at a glance you could have seen which cards are present.
Maybe this is better than a case that cards could fall out of when opened, but I'm not sure I'd trust putting this in a camera bag either, as it's still possible to snag the cards and remove them accidentally.
EDIT: After my review, I received an email from the manufacturers. They claim there is a spring holding the cards in place (although it doesn't work like a proper device, there is a detent holding it in place more than just friction). Apparently they perform tests to ensure the cards can't fall out as well, such as spinning from a lanyard. They also say they are going to increase the size of the area to write on.
For this information I've upped the rating to four stars, as it's probably a lot better than it appears, but it would still be nice if the plastic was in a different colour so the cards stood out...
This little device is handy, simple and cheap - and warmly recommended.
Only issue is that now you can lose all your micro SD cards in one go instead of one at a time! If that sounds like you, best to steer clear of this and keep them individually.
The card is great - the first time I had to put the cards in some of them were a little stiff, but after that they go in and out easily and are held securely in what feels like a pretty sturdy device.
The card is about as thick as two or three credit cards and easily fits in a wallet without adding too much bulk. I can't imagine it could be much thinner and still hold the microsd cards
This is an amazing idea! I love it! So simple but so practical. Each of the 8 storage slots are numbered, making it easy to find the card you're after and there are (small) marked spaces on the back of the holder for you to write additional identification numbers or letters (or very short, very tiny words).
The holder grips the cards nicely and there's no hint of them slipping out by accident. At the same time, however, even those with extremely short fingernails (like mine, which get bitten to the quick) will have no trouble removing the cards when they're needed.
The construction is about as robust as it can be for the thing's size, though personally I wouldn't put it in my wallet, since that goes everywhere with me and by nature of a rough & ready lifestyle, gets given some serious punishment!
Since purchasing this I have also purchased a Lowepro armoured Media Case (£24.99 from PCWorld, probably available online for less) and can heartily recommend it as an excellent companion to this card holder, as there's a pocket inside that's just the right fit. Much better protected in one of these than in a wallet, where it DOES stand to take damage. Much more secure too!
The media case also fits nicely into my Targus 10.5" notebook bag, leaving plenty of room for external dvd drive, cables, mouse, charger and an A5 netbook (plus contents of media case)
I'll soon be doing a lot of rough travelling on a quad bike and this card holder ticks all the boxes for minimalistic travel gear...Read more ›
