This is different though. The music feels like it's grown from good old fashioned indy roots rather than the rather tired emo stable. The tracks are catchy, varied, raw, passionate, breathless, short, - all that stuff that you hear when you're witnessing the birth of a band that you believe will go on to much better things.
It's refreshing to hear something in this genre that's sought out it's own niche, that's a different take on the norm. I saw these guys live a few months back and the singer was wearing a Smiths t-shirt. I don't know, it kinda sums them up.
The £8 or so you're about to spend is well worth it just to check out something truly creative. These guys will never be rich on their musical careers. They're making the music cause it's their passion and it's what they do best. All you have to do is listen, that's not so much to ask is it?
I don't know what the hell this is. Crushing hardcore? Ethereal, melodic gentleness? It's both, often in the same song. The lyrics are enigmatic, poetic, striking - much like the music itself. It's an exhausting listen, to be sure. The vocals are raw, and the melodic passages provide welcome breathers for the listener. But it's not just an intense and difficult listen, it's a hugely rewarding one. I just finished my first playthrough of the album, and I feel deflated, almost. I feel like I've gone through some terrifying dark tunnel and reached the light once more.
This is quite brilliant.
I feel in 'Devotion' they have managed to do this, beyond a shadow of doubt. The album opens with, the now almost compulsory, instrumental before charging into the relentless hardcore of 'Debauchery'', this however is hardcore with a twist, it contains various melodic and slowed down chances for the listener, and i'll bet the band, to take a breather and relax. The rest of the album is then set out from this point, it retains the post rock snesibilities of their mini album but introduces a raw hardcore element with vocalist Jake Cade screaming his lungs out. There's a second instrumental in the guise of 'Devotion' a stunning 4 and a half minute instrumental track that will leave listeners stunned.
A few fans were thrown off a bit when the tracks 'Apathy' and 'XO' were put onto the band's MySpace pagem fearing they'd changed style completely perhaps in hope of jumping on the hardcore bandwagon, but nothing could be further from the truth. This band has matured and progressed from their old style in a very successful and intriguiing way. Buy this album, these guys are going to be huge.
