This book was recommended by someone on a social media thread during a discussion about Orcas driving out or scaring away Great Whites from their usual hunting grounds. That subject alone is interesting enough and as a marine life enthusiast I decided, even though it was by now twenty years old, to read the book. I’d seen several TV documentaries about the Farallon Islands including some of the individual characters mentioned throughout the book so gave it a chance. The author only very briefly mentioned the Orca issue once but that didn’t take away from the energetic stories.
Unfortunately it kind of becomes an ego trip and is more about the author wanting to be at the centre of everything and getting her own way at a huge cost to others (one guy lost his boat, another his job) rather than anything else. She didn’t even seem to come across as if she felt even minutely responsible and may have got what she wanted but the book ends leaving you with the impression that the islands and everyone working there would have been much better off had she not gone there at all
In all honesty, I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book; if it was going to drone on and repeat the same information. But, it was a brilliant read.
Whilst yes it is about Great White Sharks, it is also much more than that. The sharks are of course a key feature, but it's the Farallon Islands that are the main character of the book.
I took my time with the reading: reading one chapter a night. There is so much information packed into each chapter, that it isn't a book to be rushed. That said, it's also not rammed full of scientific words, it is an easy read if you are interested in the subject matter.
Although foolhardy towards the end of her time at the Farallons, Susan Casey is one lucky person having experienced the adventures she has had there.
One thing is for sure, the Farallon Islands are one of nature's last outposts; reminding us humans how inferior we are against her power.
