The book is predominantly set in Ireland, France and the UK and closely follows the main character, Irish SIU operator Kate Bowen on her mission to prevent a major terrorist attack from the deadly combined forces of the Provisional IRA and Al Quaeda.
Overall I really enjoyed the book and was gripped from relatively early on. The author is obviosly very experienced in the field of crime detection and internsgional government co-operation, as a lot of the book is quite technical. However the book does lack the human interest side that I prefer in a thriller. I didn't find Kate's relationship with her boyfriend at all believable and events were swiftly wrapped up at the end of the book after the main 'event'.
That said I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment in the Kate Bowen series.
Unlike many other novels of this genre, 'The Devil's Luck' plays particular attention to detail in the planning and excursion of covert operations. If you like technical detail, this book is for you.
The female lead, Kate Bowen, is a likeable character and T.R Croke finds the right balance of her working and social lives.
I look forward to his future work.
I was able to review The Devil's Luck from a free review copy provided.
This debut conspiracy (terrorism) thriller is a truly realistic read - the author is a former detective with the Irish secret services working to stop international terrorism, so he really knows his stuff and it's truly an "inside" look into this sort of world where detectives are pitted against merciless killers with an unknown target in a deadly race against the clock to stop the next attack.
The main character, Detective Kate Bowen is tough yet has her own Achilles heel of an inability to trust her boyfriends or see the signs when they aren't what they seem to be. Her surveillance team is a great cast of real "Irish" characters - some of the vernacular will puzzle readers but once you catch on to what they mean you quickly love them: Digger, Angie, Zoom and the rest of the crew never give up on their target and go to any lengths to hunt down their foe. The settings of Dublin, London, Paris and the coast of Brittany in France all feel utterly realistic.
Great read!! I highly recommend it. It looks like book 2 will be out soon and I can't wait.
