HASH(0x93d17558) out of 5 stars Omar, I'm a Fan, but Buyer, Be Warned... 28 Feb. 2009
By Modest Man Mike - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
First off, let me say I'm a huge fan of Omar's works. I own the majority of everything he (and collaborators) put out. I've done so, because i respect the musical fringes he chooses to dabble in (and he usually brings back interesting pieces to listen to).

BUT POTENTIAL BUYER BE WARNED: this CD is a collection of dissonance and droning audio texture. Be assured, I'm not trying to Hate on Omar for this collection of tracks. This CD DOES NOT showcase any of his talent as a guitarist (there is no guitar, bass, rhythm, or recognizable instrumentation to be found at all).

I could see these tracks as ambiance for scenes in a film or a Dark Ambiance, but I can not recommend them for normal musical listening. I CAN however HIGHLY recommend some of Omar's other projects: Apocalypse Inside of an Orange, Calibration (is Pushing Luck and Key Too Far), A Manual Dexterity: Soundtrack, Vol. 1, Se Dice Bisonte, No Bùfalo, Omar Rodriguez, Megaton Shotblast

I'm a Huge fan of ALL those Albums, I always have them on constant rotation, Among all Mars Volta Albums, Free Moral Agents, Everybody's Favorite Weaponand AT THE DRIVE-IN: Vaya, Relationship of Command

This album, apparently culled from field recordings from Omar’s time in Israel, consists of the same two-minute ambient drone/whine played over and over again for forty minutes, arbitrarily broken up into tracks of various lengths.

I think you get the picture. If you think Duchamp signing a urinal was a genius artistic statement, you might love this album. To the rest of us, it’s a rather obnoxious F U from an (at the time) arrogant musician who usually makes great music but in this case decided to drop a big stinky turd on us. I don't mind ambient/noise albums that are constantly changing, like much of John Zorn's work or the Mike Patton/Merzbow collab She, but in general this type of thing bores me. Omar's collaboration with Jeremy Ward is much better Omar Rodriguez Lopez & Jeremy Michael Ward. Heck, I'd even rather listen to Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music".

This is some creepy sh*t. Like some of the other reviews said, this doesn't have Omar's classic guitar driven compositions. It's atmospheric, reversed, textural stuff but it's still very cool. The first time I heard this it was during one night when I couldn't sleep. I turned the volume up fairly loud. About halfway through I started shuddering and got super creeped out. I felt like I was losing my mind, like I was in hell being tortured. It was then that I understood why it was called "Despair". I threw my headphones off to make sure I was still sane. After the first (or more) disturbing listens, I absolutely love it. It gets easier to listen to and I actually think it's one of Omar's best solo albums.
HASH(0x93d28e40) out of 5 stars Despair is an apt title. 20 Feb. 2010

I understand that doing experimental music means pushing the boundaries of what is music but this can be taken too far. Every track on this album sounds like every other track, and consists of a droning sound with some wailing voices and other minimalist sounds effects thrown in. If this were background noise during a horror movie or video game (think a living wall of trapped souls) or the intro to a song that got progressively more complex I'd understand. But it isn't, it's 40 minutes of the same thing over and over again. If this sounds like your cup of tea, or you want to own every single Omar Rodriguez Lopez album buy Despair, otherwise it should be avoided.
HASH(0x95272af8) out of 5 stars Not Entirely Disappointing 14 Jun. 2011

I used to believe that only a true ATDI/TMV/ORL collector would be interested in purchasing DESPAIR, but if you approach this album as an artistic demonstration of meditative sounds, then it's pretty awesome! It's a great album to study, read, or fall asleep to but if you are looking for any musical value in this, then I suggest you pick a different ORL record. This album isn't a total bust. I managed to find a great use for it and with that, I actually kind of like this record.
