Review

The wonder of woodland gardening is that it looks like plants grow themselves there. After reading this book and following its guidelines, gardeners can make that happen. "Publishers Weekly" Wiley developed proven techniques that can be executed by gardeners of all proficiencies. "Booklist" There are plenty of books out there about shady gardens, but this one actually tells you how to create a woodland if you want one and don't have one There's something in this book for everyone, and a nice find under any gardener's Christmas tree. "Garden Design Online" Plantsman and woodland enthusiast Keith Wiley offers up many suggestions for carpeting the ground beneath shrubs and deciduous trees with familiar plants and those that are less well known. "Scottish Gardener" Keith Wiley demonstrates how even the smallest garden can capture the magic of woodlands, using carefully chosen plants that will thrive together, and even how to create shade if you don t have it. "The Countryman" Combining time-tested familiar plants with lesser-known varieties, "Designing and Planting a Woodland Garden" walks readers through the process of cultivating an enchanting outdoor space, inspired by the diversity and freedom of woodlands. Charmingly written and illustrated, this book gives detailed accounts of shade-loving plants and how to grow them. A wonderful book for anyone looking to add a touch of the wild to their garden. "Landlove" "

Keith Wiley is very knowledgeable plantsman whom I have admired for over 30 years so was delighted when I heard he was having a new book published about Woodland Gardening. The content is excellent but I do wish Timber Press had included better quality photographs many of them are blurry and spoil this book . Obviously published for American market with constant referencing to zones ! I would still recommend reading this book as it really encourages you to get out there and plant once you have learnt to read the site .

I can’t believe a book with photograph quality this bad, blurry and wrongly coloured was actually published. Timber Press you should be very ashamed. Let’s hope the text lives up to other reviewers recommendations.

Maybe I was expecting too much but this book really did not enthuse me at all. The list of plants is certainly not comprehensive - I'm not sure of the basis for choosing them amongst all of the other woodland gems. I had hoped for suggestions as to how to deal with the various problems that very dry woodland, or very wet, presents or maybe some innovative combinations but did not learn anything that a quick blast on Google would not have afforded. Not enough help for the beginner and too mundane for the expert.

Keith Wiley is a magician. I was lucky enough to visit Wildside (Keith's own four acre garden and nursery) about a year after he and his wife Ros had acquired the site. As a work in progress it was amazing to see what he had achieved with his mechanical digging expertise, so that when he was describing in this book the hills and valleys that he created, I could see them in my mind. He has written a brilliant exposition on woodland gardening, and his descriptions of plant combinations and the conditions they prefer are immensely helpful. The photographs enhance his words extremely well, and the book is beautifully produced and a joy to handle. Strongly recommended!

But what unfortunate timing . . . to produce a new book in 2014, then announce that the lovely Wildside will be closed for all of 2015. Great shame.

If you are interested in creating a woodland garden, or even a woodland patch within your garden, then this book will become an invaluable source of information. The visual appeal is always important to me in a gardening book, and this one has it in spades (excuse the pun!), with plenty of photographs depicting wonderful and practical woodland planting combinations that really fired up my imagination!

Keith Wiley offers his knowledge of woodland planting throughout, and an informative and extensive directory helps you choose the right plant for the right place. I'm looking forward to putting some of the ideas I've obtained from this book into practice.
