It's a fascinating account of colonial war against a people in Libya's 1930. Holmboe shows us that respect for the other and human dignity is not something new at all. And he truly represents people of the Dessert as full humans. I really enjoyed my time reading it.

Knud Holmsboe was a young Danish convert to Islam, independent-minded and with strongly held beliefs about freedom and justice. Desert Encounter is a gripping and passionate account of his travels in a 1920s Chevrolet through the North African desert. His respect for the fortitude and heroism of the desert Arabs increases as his journey takes him into areas occupied by Mussolini's black shirts, where he witnesses appalling Italian atrocities, and despairs of the emptiness of Western civilisation. This book is not only a tremendously exciting travelogue through some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world; it is also particularly relevant today for Holmsboe's dispassionate and balanced views of Islam and those who practise the faith, in times when an understanding of the events of the past are vital for an understanding of the present. I loved this book and can't recommend it highly enough.

One the best journey books around, not only that it's based on a true story of a Dutch journalist who wants to see North Africa before all colonial powers move in. Set in the early part of the 20th Century. With every page a new scenerio of adventures and life threatning situations. A must for those who want to live on the edge, and believe that people have a right to exist where ever they may be. Don't Miss This Opporunity!
