This is a good add-on item if you want to make up the value of an order to get free postage. The intended purpose of the product, however, has limited value. The grater works OK with the inktense blocks as well as the artbars, but in order to be able to shake it, you need to add too much water and then more pigment and it becomes a bit of a waste. What I do instead is I use the grater separately and grate the blocks straight into the wells on my palette, and then add water or gesso and just stir it with a brush. The pot makes a good water container for cleaning my brushes. Knowing what I know now, I would still get this product because it's good quality and quite useful, even though I use it differently from its intended purposes.

The grater works but it takes a lot of effort to get a weak wash. I would not recommend anyone to buy it.

I have found this very useful, not only for Inktense blocks, but also for Artbars. It is much better than the Shave and Save intended for Artbars, but for dual use, it must be washed and dried thoroughly after using Artbars in it, to avoid contamination of Inktense gratings with artbar waxes, (which would otherwise spoil inktense art).

I bought this to use as intended with Inktense Blocks. It really is quite useful in producing washes although I would advise that you experiment with it before using in a project. Depending on the amount of water you place in it you can get nice fine ink washes or bold colourful washes. By grating two or more blocks you can create new colours and shades. I also have used it with acrylic inks instead of water to create amazing variations of colour. Although meant for use with inktense blocks I have used it with inktense pencils, watercolour pencils, watercolour blocks, Guache blocks, pastels, charcoal and several different Derwent water soluble pencils, all with differing results and textures. Great little bit of kit for any artist.

What a cheap and nasty little bit of tat this is.

Mine arrive with the grate circle off the top - I had to push it back in. It's very thin tinny metal.
The whole thing feels cheaply made; the top screws onto the base loosely; the grate part has a push-clip top that it too severe a clip, you have to push like buggery to get it on

Before you buy this item - look for a decent but cheap grater, fine, Parmesan cheese style, and a set of £1 shop cheapy containers (or ASDA £1 each clip-seal jars!)... it's a LOT better value, maybe a little dearer but so much more worth it.

This is just tat, shame on Derwent!

Really good set and the colours are great. They have to be really wet to move about on the paper, but once dry, can be painted over. They are easy to transport too and compared to tubes, are weightless! I am glad I bought them.

I bought these along with the block dyes, the grippers and the spritzer for a project I haven't yet started. I'm sure this will be excellent as it will allow me to create fine particles of the block dye which will enable me to add tiny snippets of colour where I want it rather than end up with unwanted blobs if I just used the blocks. These items have excellent potential for the near future when I use them.

I did have a go with the Grater but I didn't find it too successful in that I couldn't get the block to grate and as I didn't need it for my picture, didn't take it any further. I shall have a go another time
