From the manufacturer
A lighter and more compact version of the Derwent Super Point Sharpener.
Your fine detailed pencil work relies on a dependable sharpener and the Derwent Super Point Mini Manual Pencil Sharpener won’t disappoint.
Secure the sharpener to your desk or table easily with the included metal clamp. An old-fashioned hand crank engages the cutting edge of the durable china steel helical blade to spiral around your pencil’s core cleanly, efficiently and effectively, crafting your pencils to a super sharp, consistent point, every time. Having the sharpest point possible helps you see more of the paper for fine detail work.
A hand crank offers more control and the auto-stop mechanism prevents over-sharpening. The see-through reservoir tray conveniently slides away from the base for easy shavings disposal.
- Sharpens pencils up to 8mm in diameter
- The helical blade never dulls
- Included cleaning brush helps keep the blade free of shavings
- 4 inches (101.6mm) high
- No batteries required

The front plate of the sharpener pulls forward and locks in place. You then pinch the gripping mechanism and insert your pencil until you feel resistance. Sharpening is then a case of turning the handle in a clockwise direction. Like other desk sharpeners, the front plate then retracts towards the body as you sharpen. Pencils end up with a very sharp and elongated tip, perfect for fine detail. I tested with graphite pencils and both wax and oil based colour pencils, all of which were sharpened without breakage. Although this is a Derwent branded sharpener, it worked perfectly with Faber Castell and Caran D'Ache coloured pencils, round and angular bodied.
The only issue I have, and the reason I have dropped one star, is that it's hard to tell when the pencil is sharpened. With a similar desk sharpener (another brand) that I had previously, the sharpening was complete when the front panel retracted completely to the body. With my first attempt on a brand new Polychromos pencil I made the mistake of assuming the same method with the Derwent but fortunately stopped before the panel got completely back. As you can see from the attached picture, where it's alongside another new pencil, it had just kept cutting away and gradually eating a quite expensive pencil. After this I made sure to take any pencil out after a few turns and check it to make sure it hadn't been half eaten. It's a shame that there's a trial and error approach required, because it does give a lovely point.
The photo shows that for the new pencils (the ones in the middle) the length of the pencil to the tip of the point of the sharpened pencil is about the same as the unsharpened ones.
I've had a couple of cheap pastel pencils not sharpen well in it, and a chinagraph pencil left too much sticky core in it. It's easy to clean out the blade though.
Emptying the tray is a bit messy if it's very full.
