The story of Derek and how he touches so many peoples lives is both touching and inspirational. In the face of his illness he learns so much about life and love at such a young age. His courage and insight is truly amazing. Well written.
5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for all teens to seniors! 24 May 2014

This was so inspiring. I couldn't put the book down! I knew it would be sad but I was so moved by this young man's thoughts about sickness and death, life and love. It reminded me once more to "take the time to smell the roses". It was a very moving tribute to his friends and family and a wonderful legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool for perspective on life 6 May 2014
By AlisonO - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Sad and true, this book reveals the inner lives of teens -- the daily ups and downs of high school, relationships and self-doubt. Add to it a cancer diagnosis and everything takes on new urgency. Told through Derek's personal journal, the book later follows his family and friends through grief and coping. It's a difficult journey for the reader, watching these people we've come to care about as they grasp for meaning and purpose in life, truly getting by day-by-day. At the end we learn how this got published and that the book is used in high school classes to teach resilience by its coauthor, Buck Harris. What a wonderful tribute to Derek, keeping his memory and spirit alive by offering others hope through his journal. I can see this as a powerful tool for school guidance counselors, bereavement counselors and anyone with teens who need some perspective on life.
5.0 out of 5 stars why Derek's Gift keeps giving 4 Jun. 2014
By Clemens Schoenebeck, author, Dancing with Fireflies - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I had the unique privilege of reading a copy of Derek's original journal. It would be an understatement to say that it was powerful and spiritually moving, and could stand alone as written by Derek. Hard to imagine how it could get better. With the sensitive writing hand of Michael Tougias, the story is enhanced and given even more depth. It's as if he caressed this young man's generous soul with additional layers of love, retelling the story through the eyes of Derek's parents, his best friend, his devoted girlfriend. What a gift for Buck Harris, the teacher who shared what he himself learned, by using these life lessons as a guide for his high school students. Reading Derek's Gift with Tougias' graceful weaving in of all these other viewpoints is, in itself, a gift which all of us must receive.
